Missing Ship Spotted Off African Coast

By Harry Kimball,  Newser Staff

(Newser) – The Russian-crewed Arctic Sea has been spotted off the coast of West Africa today, say French officials who claim to have seen a ship resembling it near the Cape Verde islands. The Arctic Sea, last seen on July 30, is carrying $1.8 million in lumber and was due to deliver it to a port in Algeria, the Guardian reports. Watchers have suggested the hijacking could have been inspired by a Russian commercial dispute.

They have changed the story now - apparently the report that the ship was spotted was wrong. Still missing.

This has nothing to do with African continent based pirates, as far as we know, as far as we know... the Arctic Sea sailed from Finland and had been scheduled to dock in the Algerian port of Bejaia on 4 August, had reportedly been attacked twice during its journey - once off the Swedish coast, and then off the Portuguese coast. Reportedly, all COMM and guidance systems were vandalized. My question... if there's no active or passive GPS tracking nor communication with this vesicle, shouldn't it be boarded and inspected... Even if in international waters for humanitarian efforts, the sake of the crew and the safety of the vesicle? One can just imagine the potential for a worse case scenarios spinning out of this ordeal (i.e.; Black Sunday)...
