(Newser) – President Obama's appearance at a VFW convention in Phoenix today was marked by yet another appearance of a man with a gun, the Arizona Republic reports. As separate crowds of protesters for and against health care reform rallied outside the Phoenix convention center, a man with an AR-15 rifle and pistol on his hip could be seen milling about with the pro-reform demonstrators. Asked why he was armed, the man responded: “Because I can do it. In Arizona, I still have some freedoms."

The ongoing "gun show" is sheer intimidation tactics. Smacks of rampant testosterone. Showing up to assert their capacity for violence and to scare off the civil mannered. There is NO place for this kind of flagrant disregard for peaceful assembly and democratic discourse. There are plenty of appropriate places for guns; a public assembly on the issue of health care is NOT one of them. Shame on AZ for turning a blind eye. Yet another means by which the Right short circuits the democratic process.

control issues is what i see the problem as. they have no control over the other aspects of their lives. their religions are forced down their throats from birth, they are allowed no flexibility in/of thought, many/most are indebted up to their necks (im not saying no one else is her, of course). i bet a ton of them dont have any medical insurance - which only burdens a person with stress and worry. some are probably just control freak assholes/cop types. many are out of work and angry about it. alot are psychotic mofos who want desperately to be the one who does it.... but i think a lot of it is control issues personally, and only having 'guns' as the one thing 'that is yours' - just a thought

The 2nd Amendment was written when the government and the public were relatively equally armed, with the goal to prevent the government from using the military against a defenseless populace, in response to British policies of seizing weapons belonging to individuals and to militias. The current situation is very different, and the 2nd Amendment needs reform to reflect this difference. Or we need to legalize sale of F-22s to the public. Reply

About once or twice a year in this country, we have a black male walking through his own neighborhood, minding his own businesss, when he is approached by police offficers. Reaching for ID, or maybe jsut needing to scratch his nose, he suddenly is riddled by enough bullets to equip a platoon of Marines. When it happens to black males, the wing nuts contort and twist to offer up all sorts of reasons why it's 'understandable' things like this happens. Can you imagine the reaction from the right when/if one of these gun-toting wing nuts is shot by the police? Suddenly there will be 'no reason' something like this could happen. 'Obama is declaring war on white people...' 'Hitler did the same thing...' blah blah blah. Reply
