Producer Recalls 68K Pounds of Calif. Spinach

Posted Aug 30, 07 4:07 PM CDT in Science & Health US

(Newser) – A California produce company is recalling over 68K pounds of bagged spinach after a sample taken from one of the company's packing plants tested positive for salmonella, the San Jose Mercury News reports. But Metz Fresh has likely averted a repeat of last year's contaminated spinach mess, corralling 90% of the potentially contaminated produce before it hit stores.

Salmonella was discovered in just one sample, but Metz said it erred on the side of caution and recalled spinach from three processing lines. The company released tracking codes for the remaining produce so customers can dump it or get a refund; health officials are still trying to determine whether any contaminated spinach was actually sold or served to customers.

In a statement, Metz Fresh said the salmonella was detected in a single sample of Spinach, but as a precaution all produce handled by the same assembly line would be recalled.   (Shutterstock.com)
