Beer-Drinking Model Demands Public Caning

Share

(Newser) – A Malaysian model sentenced to caning for drinking beer wants her punishment carried out in public, CNN reports. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, will be the first woman to be flogged for alcohol consumption in the Muslim-majority nation. "Let's be transparent" about the punishment, Kartika has insisted. Her father said a public caning will "challenge" the punishment. "They say they are gentlemen who want to uphold values. Then the public should judge how gentlemanly it is," he said.

Kartika will receive six strokes with a rattan cane as punishment for drinking beer in a hotel bar during a visit to Malaysia from Singapore, where she lives with her husband and two children. Malaysia prohibits alcohol consumption by Muslims—including those like Kartika who are visiting from other countries—but allows it for the country's Buddhist, Christian and Hindu minorities.

I have no love for the Islamic Religion but I have little use for any religion, once you organised a religion seems they become thugs and gangs. Saying that let us not forget we as Americans are not far removed from this type thing, in the past we have burned women for not being the same as the rest, we have hung black men for having the audacity to dare look at a white woman, no...we are not that far removed at all...in more recent events we as Americans have even locked up innocent people on an island prison because their religion didn't match ours and also their skin color happened to be the wrong color........One final remark to get me thumbed down, this woman could ave avoided the entire thing, perhaps this is her publicity stunt to increase her fame? She knew the laws and knew them well yet she drank publicly and flaunted both the law as well as the religion she knew this would happen or at least knew there was a chance....When we travel we are told to obey local customs and laws....she was from there and knew better, I am not saying it is right but she knew better.

All religions. Not just Islam - although they sure do seem to want to eclipse the catholics in their craziness. UrUndertaker: "Just obey the laws" - even if they're wrong? You sound quite biblical! Your way, Africa would still be a colony, slaves would still be picking cotton, and South Africa would still be under apartheid. I admire people with the courage (and it takes supreme courage) to stand up to unjust laws.

Rosa Parks paid a price, she got her accolades later but she indeed paid her price trust me. I never said it was right by our way of viewing things but she knew the law and she wanted to be in the spotlight as she is a star in her own country and wants to press change, well she broke the rules and just as Rosa Parks paid now she will pay also, right or wrong. As per the "Slavery" remark? I have some late breaking news for you, Lincoln did not free the Blacks, he helped slavery transform. From the slave quarters as they were once called they became known as "Share Croppers", do you know what the average pay for a share cropper was and still is in many places? Less than 15 cents per hour workded, you also get 1 hog per year for your meat supply and you are allowed to grow a small garden between your 16 to 18 ghour days and yes, in Mississippi they still have share coppers and business as usual for the uneducated who know nothing but farm life, it is well hidden but it is there. Slavery is very much alive in America, dig deep you can find it most anywhere
