(Newser) Inglourious Basterds had a glorious opening weekend, scalping the box office for $37.6 million to give Quentin Tarantino the best opening of his career, USA Today reports. District 9 continued its strong showing in second place with $18.9 million, while GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra ($12.5 million), The Time Traveler's Wife ($10 million), and Julie & Julia ($9 million) rounded out the top five.

I don't know why I still run right out to see a Tarantino film. Personally, I haven't enjoyed one since Jackie Brown, and think his only two brilliant films were Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. But then again, those films' brilliance likely had more to do with Roger Avary tempering Tarantino's OCD and id. IB had it's moments of dialouge and several roles that shown, but was primarily and exercise in glorifying sadism if god is on your side. I'm disappointed in Pitt taking this role, even though he played it well. This is coming from a guy that puts Fight Club and Pulp Fiction in my top 5 of all time. Reply
