Preschooler ends up eating chicken nuggets instead of home-packed meal

(NEWSER) - A North Carolina preschooler arrived at school with a lunch packed by her mom, but ended up eating just three chicken nuggets from the school cafeteria because a state agent didn't think her packed lunch was nutritious enough. Pre-kindergarten programs are required to serve lunches that meet USDA guidelines—one serving each of meat, milk, and grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables—and if lunches sent from home don't meet the guidelines, the programs must provide whatever is missing. The preschooler's lunch included a turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice, the Carolina Journal reports. More»

Mediterranean fare apparently good for the brain, too

(NEWSER) - Add this to the potential benefits of the Mediterranean diet: It might just help your brain along with your heart, a new study suggests. Using MRI scans of the brain, researchers found that those who ate a diet based on fruits, veggies, fish, whole grains, olive oil, and a moderate amount of alcohol had healthier blood vessels up there, reports the Wall Street Journal . One researcher involved with the study in the Archives of Neurology cautions that the results aren't definitive, but they suggest the diet provides some measure of protection for the blood vessels. Just 10% approve of work on Hill, according to latest Gallup poll

(NEWSER) - A Gallup poll released Wednesday finds that Americans' approval of Congress has hit yet another record low: 10%. There aren't many institutions Americans have liked less over the last 50-or-so years, according to Gallup: Only Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and OJ Simpson detective Mark Fuhrman have ever scored lower. LeRoy teens might unconsciously mimic each other: Neurologist

(NEWSER) - Erin Brockovich is testing soil samples to see whether there might be a toxic link to a mysterious illness hitting teens in upstate New York, but a neurology professor has a different culprit in mind: Facebook and other forms of social media. He thinks the victims—more than a dozen teenagers have started displaying serious facial tics and twitching—could be unconsciously mimicking each other after seeing videos on Facebook and YouTube, reports WKBW of Buffalo.
