World's First Cloned Wolf Dies

Cause of death a mystery

Share

(Newser) – One of  of the world's first two cloned wolves has died due to unknown causes, reports the Korea Times. Snuwolf, 4, was found dead at South Korea's national zoo. Her identical sister, Snuwolffy, remains healthy. "Snuwolf had been in good condition," said Prof. Shin Nam-sik, a leader of the team that cloned the pair. "Wild animals often die suddenly. We will know the cause of death with the results of the autopsy."

Snuwolf and Snuwolffy are seen at the Seoul Zoo in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, South Korea. Snuwolf has died due to unknown causes.

"it's not nice to fool mother nature." sad story. but is this truly a good way to propagate the species? "Wild animals often die suddenly..." and therein lies the problem. wild animals are just that, wild. Reply

First of all--necropsy. It's only an autopsy when you're viewing your own species...I don't think wolves are going to do the examining?? (teehee. I see an LOLcat caption). Second, this is common in cloned animals, because as we (and animals) age, the telomeres on our chromosomes shorten--these are sort of a buffer region before the encoding region begins. So, if these are shortened by a few base pairs, it opens the door to mutations in the cloning process. Remember Dolly? When she was born her DNA was already years old. If we could only learn how to prevent telomeres from shortening, we've practically found the fountain of youth! Great article! Reply
