Basketball phenom LeBron James made a team-record 31 points during the 118-81 victory against Argentina in the FIBA Americas championship last night. Argentina, the defending Olympic champion, was missing key players including Manu Ginobili, but still secured a place in Beijing. The American team won 10 games in 12 days, echoing early Dream Team successes.

The team hasn’t led by less than 14 points at half time this tournament. James' total beats the record set by Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson, who each scored 28 points in Olympic qualifying matches. Luis Scola, from Argentina, managed 23 points last night against an American team that slammed home five dunks in a row in the second quarter. (More basketball stories.)
