A meager 1% of New York City cabbies are women, and now one of them is publishing a book about her strange adventures prowling the streets atop a cushion behind the wheel of her taxi. Melissa Plaut, 32, started hacking three years ago and began tracking the miles in a blog. Now Random House has taken it hardcover.

She talks about the camraderie of hanging out with other drivers in the garage, the excitement of celebrities like comedian Jon Stewart in her back seat, and being chased by a cop with road rage. "I wanted to lead an interesting life, I guess," she told Reuters during an interview in her cab. "There's something addictive about it." (More book stories.)
