No Rest for Beleaguered President

Obama steels for fight as digs at hubris, inexperience continue

Share

(Newser) – Barack Obama and his allies are calling this week a make-or-break climax for his  administration. He met with the House and Senate leadership last week, his top lieutenants blanketed the talk shows yesterday, and he's holding two meetings with health advisers today. Obama is faced with finishing the health-care battle without the wave of public support that swept him into power, notes the New York Times.

Obama "had to expend some political capital" to push through the economic stimulus package and other critical recovery measures, making it harder to bring through major health reform, concedes Obama's senior adviser David Axelrod. That's the spin, in any case, that the White House prefers to another one gaining traction: that a young president believed his own press and overreached. As one Republican said: "If they thought that his popularity and the good will he had would support liberal policies, they were wrong."

It goes without saying that a lot is riding now on his ability to re-energize the health care debate and bring it home to a successful conclusion. Nothing will influence the perception of the
presidency more. - Presidential adviser John Podesta

It’s time to pay the butchers bill. Obama got what he asked for, leader of the free world. The problem is people are expecting him to have all the answers as he promised he would. Hope and Change sound great, however depleted cash reserves, excessive spending, partisan politics and unrealistic goals are the reality of his administration. Or in other words, a lack of experience. Reply

No, it's a lack of balls, and bad advice from old-school Clinton-ear corporatist advisors who keep pandering to Republicans as they they still had clout. If Obama sacrifices his base to try to win over un-winnable Republicans, he can kiss 2010 and 2012 goodbye,.

Obama runs as the opposite of the crappy Republican administration, offering change: wins election by large margin. Obama begins administration with aggressive policy changes that reverse corrupt GOP programs: Approval rating 69%. Obama starts wavering on torture transparency and does nothing about domestic surveillance: approval rate begins falling. Obama concedes too much to GOP on stimulus: approval rate falling. Obama hands the driver's seat in Health Care Reform to Republicans: approval rate tanks. Hmmm...does anyone see a pattern here?

odowd80: You're lying to yourself if you think the agenda for Health Care Reform has been hijacked by Republicans. "Blue dog" democrats are generally opposed to the option being discussed as well. This issue is not falling completely along party lines. Stop trying to convince yourself otherwise. You look like nothing more than a political hack.
