Beatles Remasters Pack a Wallop

CDs showcase Fab Four as they were meant to be heard

(Newser) – The Beatles just got better: every one of their original albums and a batch of collected singles has been remastered, boosting the quality to the level “the Beatles themselves would have heard and intended,” writes Matt Hurwitz in the Washington Post. The stereo CDs remind us that the Beatles were a “rock band”: these recordings pack a punch not heard on the older discs.

“You can now hear John Lennon's raucous vocal in all its powerfully shredded glory on 'Twist and Shout',” writes Hurwitz. In the past, Paul McCartney’s bass was so powerful it had to be toned down in mastering to keep the needle on the record player. Now, we can finally hear its full range. The new recordings remove pops and clicks not made by the Beatles, "but you can still hear (Ringo) Starr's squeaky bass pedal on 1963's 'All I've Got to Do.'" After all, says one engineer, "We weren't trying to change history."

Ah, it's all good, doc, it's all good. The Who were my first concert. I just never really cared for the Beatles. I like some of their songs, but on the whole, not so much. All three bands have a place in rock history, no doubt.

The Rolling Stones out-rocked them both....and STILL out-rock them both....

Wharf- agreed. But the Who was more celestial in their achievements. Snarly- yes, the Stones rock, but they only have two flavors, really- and their output has been crap-filled since the beginning. Granted, each album has a song or two on it that makes it worth owning- even Dirty Work- but rarely more than that. The Beatles weren't very interesting until they got strung-out on LSD...and then they started to lose the plot. In any instance, i should have prefaced my remark (perhaps unnecessarily) by saying that it was only personal opinion- a quantitative assessment of the group mentioned in terms of overall GETS-MY-ROCKS-OFF goodness.
