(Newser) – After bad weather kept it from heading to Florida for the second consecutive day, the space shuttle Discovery touched down safely in California moments ago, Space.com reports. The crew returns after a 14-day mission that including resupplying and repairing the International Space Station.

(NEWSER) - Atlantis has docked with the International Space Station, yet another final milestone as NASA winds down its storied shuttle program with what the AP is perhaps excessively referring to as "a flight full of passion." "Atlantis arriving," called space station astronaut Ronald Garan Jr. as the station's naval bell chimed. "Welcome to the International Space Station for the last time." Moscow will have a monopoly on flights to ISS for years

(NEWSER) - After the last US space shuttle flight blasts off tomorrow, Russia will officially have a monopoly on outer space. The 40-year-old Soyuz capsule will be the only vessel capable of reaching the International Space Station, and Russia can charge dearly for rides, the Wall Street Journal reports. “We are not in a very comfortable situation, and when I say uncomfortable, that is a euphemism,” says the director of the European Space Agency. “We made a collective mistake.” More»

Endeavour Wraps Final Mission

Mark Kelly and crew will undock tonight, return home

(NEWSER) - It's all over for Endeavour but the undocking: The shuttle's crew floated out the door this morning and closed the hatch behind them, having completed Endeavour's final mission. "We're looking forward to getting home," said commander Mark Kelly, "and we're going to leave these guys to some peace and quiet and not disturb their space station anymore." The crew will get some sleep before undocking late tonight and starting the two-day trip home, reports the AP. More»

States Suspect Life Insurers Are Screwing the Dead

Some ignoring information showing policy holders are dead

(NEWSER) - Dozens of states are investigating the possibility that major insurance companies have been less than conscientious about paying out life insurance benefits for their dead customers. The investigations began when 35 states signed up for an auditing firm’s offer to look for unclaimed life insurance benefits that could be seized by states as abandoned property. But investigators discovered that insurers appeared to be ignoring the deaths of some clients—even as they used those same sources to justify cutting off annuity payments to others, the Wall Street Journal explains.
