(Newser) – Men aren’t nearly as good at telling the truth as the fairer sex, according to a new poll from Fox, conducted to promote its Lie To Me DVDs. Men lie six times a day according to the study, twice as much as women. Just for kicks, here are the top lies both genders tell each other:

Men

  1. Nothing’s wrong, I’m fine.
  2. This will be my last drink.
  3. No, that doesn’t make you look fat.
  4. I had no signal.
  5. My battery died.
  6. Sorry, I missed your call.

          Women

  1. Nothing’s wrong, I’m fine.
  2. Oh, this isn’t new, I’ve had it for ages.
  3. It wasn’t that expensive.
  4. It was on sale.
  5. I’m on my way.
  6. I don’t know where it is, I haven’t touched it.

You know, in our culture lies have a very negative connotation. In Japan they have terms called Tatemae and Honne and it's essentially the belief that each opinion may have two variants. One is your personal opinion (which as the name suggests, you keep to yourself) and the other is a "socially-acceptable" variant of the same. In that particular culture, a "white lie" is perceived as a natural and accepted part of being a social creature. It's not given an unnecessary negative connotation that does nothing but raise stress levels for everyone involved. If you can get past labeling everything someone may not entirely mean as a "lie" and realize that a lie is more accurately defined as a statement with the express intent to deceive we'd achieve much more happiness in interpersonal relationships. Someone telling you that it doesn't make you look fat is more akin to being socially adaptable than it is to straight out deceiving someone with a lie. I don't hold my breath though, that cultural facet is far too ingrained, but maybe someone will read it and take a different approach to this phenomenon and that will take some of the edge off =P

none of those are LIES - they are fibs, or prevarications. not lies. a lie would be "no, i'm not cheating on you" when you are. or saying you're pregnant when you arent. big stuff. telling a woman that she doesnt look fat in those jeans is just good common sense, not a lie.
