Chocoholics Spurn American Cadbury

Many see right through US bars, actually made by Hershey

(Newser) – Serious chocolate fans responded warily to the news of Kraft's bid for Cadbury—especially in the US, where aficionados reject the domestic brand anyway. It’s made by Hershey, not the British firm itself, and that just won’t cut it for hardcore devotees of the British brand, the Wall Street Journal reports. "If you were to hold a gun to my head, and say, 'Eat this Hershey bar!' I'd say: 'Shoot me,'" vows one fan.

They flock to stores that carry the imported stuff despite occasional finger-wagging from Hershey, which licenses the Cadbury name. American bars contain more cocoa butter because of a US ban on vegetable fat in chocolate. That formula means it can “deliver its flavor over a long period of time,” says a food scientist. But the British chocolate bars are “silkier, smoother, and they don't leave an aftertaste,” says one fan.

Cadbury changed the formula in Australia and shrunk the chocolate blocks, from 250g to 200g - they can bash it, I won't buy any more. When I wrote and complained about the shrinking size of the chocolate bars they emailed me to say it was a popular change according to their market surveys. Who have they been surveying? They look the same size 'cos now they're in a little cardboard box. Goodbye Cadbury.

A regular Cadbury dark chocolate bar is STILL light years better than a Hershey's bar. At least its smooth and creamy. Hershey bars taste like the granulated sugar isn't even dissolved.

Not just Cadbury, but any plain English chocolate is better than Hershey's, Ghiradelli, etc. Same for English crisps vs. U.S. Potato chips. Give me Walkers anyday
