Cancer survivor Suzanne Somers believes 'poison,' 'toxins' killed Patrick Swayze

(Newser) – Suzanne Somers thinks she knows what killed Patrick Swayze, and it wasn’t cancer—it was chemotherapy, she tells the National Post. “They took this beautiful man,” says Somers, a cancer survivor who has a book about the disease coming out next month, “and they basically put poison in him.” Somers herself rejected chemotherapy, against the advice of her doctors, and beat her breast cancer.

“Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body?” Somers continues. “I hate to be this controversial. I'm a singer-dancer-comedienne. But we have an epidemic going on, and I have to say it.”

Pancreatic cancer--you are fucked. She has some nerve having a lump in her breast and comparing it to that. You can live without a tit, kidney, lung, half a liver whatever. You can't live without a pancreas. From the time he got diagnosed until he died was a very long time for his cancer. He did everything right and I'm a bit miffed at someone saying that he could have done better. That poison, you idiot kept him alive. Move as close to the particle accelerator as you can if you get pancreatic cancer. Seriously, most of the little jets in this country are flying nuclear medicine drugs. Swayze managed to beat high odds against a very aggressive form of the disease and live about a year and a half longer than typical. HIs treatments were effective. Even though Ms. Somers would like to believe that she is keeping cancer at bay with her cockamamie diet and truckloads of quack supplements each day, she isn't. It's not the doctors who God knows aren't in it for the money these days, it's the supplement manufacturers who are in it for billions.

Anyone ever seen the documentary, Crazy, Sexy Cancer? That is a good illustration into the world of alternative cancer treatment. I don't know how open I would be to a wheat grass enema, but then again if I had cancer I would be more willing to try. Reply

Crazy, Sexy Cancer is as silly and as alluring as it's title. It is based on totally unfounded and often false info. Despite its creator's charm, it's just bad info doing a lot of damage. There are alternative or integrative treatments that work, ginger does relieve the side effect of nausea and cumerin (tumeric) does appear to have some efficacy for some cancers. But wheat grass or any other form of enema is a sadistic waste of time. While cancers can be caused by certain toxins damaging the DNA of normal cells, cancers cannot be cured by "detoxing" -- the genie's already out of the bottle, the DNA can't be fixed that way and the cancer can't be eradicated or even kept at bay that way.

She is right. We are like sheep to the medical profession and the cancer kills us anyway and then we pay them. We should demand alternative ways to cure cancer not just play with it. The squeaky wheel gets oiled. I admire Suzanne. She took control of her life and her disease, and she is alive and well. BUY her book and stop being sheep. Survival rates for cancers have been climbing each year -- except for the alternative crowd. There've been several articles in the past week on over treatment of breast cancer. There are many cases of survivors for whom surgery is enough. Few of them used any "alternative ways." Ms. Sommrs had extensive surgery and much breast tissue was removed. Her surgeons, not her supplements, deserve the credit here.

SS got LUCKY, end of story. She didn't take control of her disease; her cancer was nowhere near as serious or advanced as Swayze's. I think she should be sued for every person who has died taking her "advice." I have a friend right now in South Korea, trying to stop a fatal strain of prostate cancer with a cutting edge stem cell treatment not yet available in the US. He and his family and friends fundriased $50k to finance the trip and treatment. THAT is taking control of your life and your disease; not making money off a book full of quackery. Reply

Ms. Somers had extensive surgery to remove all cancerous & suspicious tissue. Her surgeon's and pathologist's skills deserve the credit for her survival so far. There have also been stories just in the past week on the over treatment of breast cancer. So Ms. Somers may just be an example of this new wave of more conservative treatment. If any of the supplements she is taking actually were effective, you can bet a big pharma company would be working on a proprietary, patentable formulation right now as they have before with drugs such as penicillin and Heparin.

I'm a cancer survivor who did go with chemo. Did I want to.........no, but my family felt If did'nt and the cancer came back, I would blame myself. The chemo was so horrific that I could not complete all treatments. Than the cancer surfaced two yrs later in my brain. I'm ok now and so far cancer free, Would I ever take chemo again. I doubt it..............................so I guess I feel I can give my opinion having lived this experience. Every one must do what's right for them. Is there choice necessarily the right choice............only God knows. Reply

Sadly, some tumors are chemo resistant and even for ones that are not, stem cells may remain to form new tumors in distant parts of the body later on. New advances based on determining the genetics of the patient's actual tumor and in destroying cancer stem cells are in the works. We can expect individualized treatments in the not too distant future.

Advances in technologies such as genetics have changed the way researchers and doctors think about treating cancer. Cancer cells have different metabolisms from normal cells. Disrupting their metabolisms is a new direction. It used to be each cancer was treated as a separate disease. We now know that very different cancers share metabolic pathways. In the future you will see cancer generalists or docs who treat what looks like a random group of cancers, rather than single cancer specialists A master switch to turn off the cancer's unbridled growth has been recently discovered as well. It's an exciting time in cancer research and Americans can be grateful for having Francis Collins in charge of the NIH. After nearly a decade of falling behind in research due to flat funding from the Bush administration, the US has a chance to catch back up again!

I think that more people need to start looking at other alternitives to percription drugs, and surgury. natural cures defently work, you should not do it on your own, you should see a hollistic doctor. i my self go natural way for my problem. I have bad kidneys, born that way. the fact that they don't work correctly i get infections, and massive pain due to the infection. for two years yes that is two years my "kidney" dr put me on differnt antibotics, i became that week i could not pick up my two yera old child. i said f this there has to be something better. i began reaserching, and found that natural jucies, ocean spray cranberry juice, and lean meats are best for the kidneys. i started drinking more water, cranberry juice, when out and bought a juicer, and three years later not one infection. Now as for patrick his cancer was to far gone for natural cures to work. cancer needs to be caught early. Reply

I am sorry you've been suffering and glad you've found some things that make you feel better. For anyone who is seriously ill, where you're treated makes a big difference in outcome. The quality of medical care varies greatly in different parts of the country. A study out today determined that urban medical centers (teaching hospitals) have much better outcomes, especially for certain diseases. Drinking more water was a very good move and one any doctor should recommend. Cranberry juice has been shown to be effective for UTI's but it encourages formation of kidney stones. Be careful. Try finding a doctor who will listen to you and work with you. Holistic docs can be competent or not just like ones in any other specialty. Thoroughly evaluate: check out the schools they went to, what board certifications they have, where & with whom they trained and what they do to consistently keep up with advances in the field. Keep well.

I have a family member who had aggressively metastasized pancreatic cancer and with the help of chemo and radiation therapy they're not only doing well, but they're cancer-free. Maybe I should write a book extolling the virtues of modern medicine and then sell it after Suzanne Somers dies? Reply

What works for one person, doesn't always work for another. Have any of you actually experienced or seen someone close go through the hell of Chemo and/or radiation?? it's not good, and they are pumping poison's into your body, but that is the person's choice. People need to mind their own business. Chemo didn't work for my mother, I lost her almost 7 years ago, but surgery, chemo and radiation also saved my little brothers life. If I was told I was going to die, no matter what, I would not do any treatment, the treatment is what usually makes the person so sick. You might as well spend what little time you have left doing what you can, instead of being horribly sick, just to live an extra 3 months. Reply

Suzanne is a very bright lady. Big Pharma isn't allowed to patent natural things so they can only make test-tube likenesses that our bodies usually try to reject by giving us terrible side effects. Chemo IS a killer and there are proven natural cures out there, but they are squashed by Big Pharma. "whatfreshhell" is a horrible person. You know nothing of what you are talking about, and to be so ANGRY with your words is amazing. Yes, Suzanne uses natural hormone therapy... big Pharma had women using Premarin for 50 years and KNOWINGLY killed 5000 women A MONTH from it.
