(Newser) – Google has confirmed what many had guessed—that its mysterious UFO-themed logos this month were a tribute to British science fiction writer HG Wells, the Telegraph reports. The latest logo, which features the Martian fighting machines from War of the Worlds, takes Googlers to a list of search results for Wells, who would have been 143 years old today. Earlier logos featured crop circles and a UFO abucting an "O" from "Google."

"Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places," a Google design chief wrote on Google's official blog. "We wanted to celebrate HG Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what is possible, on this planet and beyond. And maybe have some fun while we were doing it."
