Heard Gupta's Swine Flu Spiel? Well, He Got It, Too

CNN doc, and onetime Surgeon General candidate, falls ill in Afghanistan

Share

(Newser) – Now just imagine how embarrassing this would’ve been if he had been Surgeon General: Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s medical talking head, got swine flu on a recent reporting trip to Afghanistan, he writes in a blog post today. “I am not someone who gets sick, really ever,” he writes. “And this was the sickest I have ever been.”

“It is worth pointing out the irony of a medical reporter getting influenza type A,” Gupta notes, adding that he got to visit a battlefield hospital as an actual patient. And now we know he’s not just regurgitating what your own doctor might tell you. “It was a lot like … the flu—with a different name.”

Medical types who work on and around sick people are bound to pick something up from time to time. It's not really a big deal. Reply

How is it embarrasing? It's their job to hang around people who are ill. Stands to reason they' re bound to pick up a germ or two and find themselves in the same boat as their patients. Sick. Reply

Well I guess that's it! Take away health professionals' sick days cause they aren't supposed to be able to get sick anyway. (sarcasm) Reply
