Chicago Student's Beating Death Caught on Tape

Police beef up patrols after savage gang melee

(Newser) – Chicago police are stepping up patrols today at a high school where a 16-year-old honor student's gruesome beating death in a gang melee was captured on video. Students scream in horror as Derrion Albert crumples to the ground and covers his head in vain as he's repeatedly pummeled with wooden planks in the video shot by a female student. Police are questioning suspects in the tape, which was turned over by the student to police and the local Fox news station.

Witnesses said Albert was attacked as he came to the aid of a victim near Fenger High School. The disturbing video "hurt to watch," said his aunt. But his family is hopeful the tape will nail the culprits in Derrion's death. Derrion's grandfather was unable to view the video. "The graphics are too strong for me," he told the Chicago Tribune. "God bless whoever took that video. It did and said it all."

I have a permit to carry a weapon. I carry it daily. If I had been the one who had been attacked, this would be a different story.... Man kills assailant(s) who attack him with boards caught on tape. It is okay to defend yourself. Most states allow you to conceal carry a gun.... except for some of the most liberal states.

unfortunately in Europe laws are so strict about guns that it is virtually impossible to carry one lawfully except when hunting or transporting a handgun to the range. by the way this does not mean that there are no guns and people carrying weaponry around. The teachings of C.Beccaria , who is famous for his writings against the practice of torture in trials, did not receive equal attention when speaking about the foolish laws that forbid to carry weapons: only honest, law-abiding citizens respect these laws - oops, they are just the ones that should carry guns, while thugs basically wipe their asses with substantial law bills, imagine how much they care about gun laws. Beccaria called these laws 'laws that forbid fire because it burns and water because it drowns' . for once i totally agree with IdontLikeYou .

@dly. I am from Chicago. I was RAISED half a block from Fenger HS -113th and Union was my house for about 20 years, Fenger stretches from 112 to 113, from Union to Wallace, google map it. I know the area:Roseland, West Pulman, AKA the Wild Wild 100s. I know the mentality. If you think you owning a gun will solve all your problems, you're SERIOUSLY mistaken. Trust me, if you had retaliated and you had no group support -another gang, CPD, mob, etc.- you wouldn't have lasted a week. This is the typical I-can-solve-ANYTHING-with-force arguments we saw from GWB and it permeates American culture: I can simply FORCE you to do what I want, with threat of violence. That only creates MORE threats of violence. EVENTUALLY someone has to put up or shut up. Force only begets more force. And the joke is, the one that comes for you is going to be a 12-year-old girl, she won't get tried as an adult and she will be a 'helpless' damsel led astray and get court lenience. Have not been robbed , mugged, assaulted, or house broken into..(it has happened rarely in some sections though)..Lived in San Diego. less than four years, nearly car jacked twice, car busted into five times, robbed once and and almost assaulted a few times by roving thugs .....I still think I have made the right choice Reply

Shannon, not to buy in to the racist POV of other posters, but this type of thing does not happen often among white youths. The socioeconomic conditions under which most whites live are different, and violence is not typically a way of life for white children. It is out of necessity, survival, control, that people take to violence.

did anyone take a closer look at this video? when a bunch of people are crowded behind that car beating someone, a white kid runs out; he was the one being targeted. as he runs out, Derrien actually takes a swing at him and misses, then gets clogged by a 2 by 4. This to me is a clear case of pure violence in groups-- young people just wanting to beat this s** out of something or someone for the heck of it. Reply

I don't even want to watch the video!!! Let the police do that. This happened because: 1. Children in school do not have a class called "Respect each other 101" given from first grade until 12th grade. or a class called "Do to others what you would want done unto you." 2. We can thank the ACLU for taking these teachings out of school. 3. Parents are too busy working to teach these values at home, and it only takes a few children to fall through the cracks to become like this. I hope our children are not expected to spend too much time at school because it is not the answer to everything. Plus, there is a good chance one's child will just end up dead before class is done.
