Pick an OS: Uncool Robots or Snooty Evangelists?

New Microsoft ads go for Mac-esque buzz—and fail laughably

Share

(Newser) – Anyone who wants a computer faces an unpleasant choice: Mac OS or Windows. Now, Windows is “awful”— buggy, at times barely functional. But one expert would rather assign himself to Microsoft purgatory than join the club of snooty, self-satisfied cooler-than-thou Mac users. “Stop showing me your iPhone,” Charlie Brooker writes for the Guardian. “Stop stroking your Macbook. Stop telling me to get one.”

Still, he would never recommend Windows. “No one has ever earnestly turned to a fellow human being and said, "Hey, have you considered Windows?” It’s this lack of buzz Microsoft is now laughably trying to fight with videos entreating consumers to throw Windows 7 launch parties—yes, you read that right. Microsoft’s tone-deafness reaches a new low with the videos, but Brooker still prefers the “clumping, clueless, uncool, crappiness of Microsoft's bland Stepford gang to the creepy assurance of the average Mac evangelist.”

What a hoot that video is - A Windows 7 party. Microsoft must be joking. I still use XP which is kinda OK but Vista was a complete Joke (on us) and I have no reason to think that 7 will be any better. If I was bit more Tekky inclined I would head straight for the Linux platform. None of my favourite apps seem to work on Apple so I guess I am stuck with Mr Gates & Chums . Reply

Its always amusing to see people bash on WinVista as if it was the worst thing ever... I will admit it was pretty bad at first, but after the service pack, vista worked quite well. I used Vista Ultimate for about a year, year and a half, and I had less problems with that than I did with XP, but then again, Windows OSs are funny like that, they tend to be what you make of them.

Notice how the dubbed in 'call customer service if you have any problems" when the left-most guy was discussing that you need to first install win. 7 a few days before the party. Reply

It's not just the OS. I have a wireless mouse here at the office. It's at a different tracking speed than both the touch pad and my mouse at home. They're both Microsoft products. The Microsoft driver causes screen flicker. First thing I do is pskill ipoint.exe in a dos box upon starting up (it's in a startup batch file now). But when I need to change the tracking speed, ipiont.exe comes back up, so I have to manually kill it again. Just one aspect of life with Windows...(sorry about this venting...) Reply
