Arizona Puts Padres Away 9-6

Posted Sep 6, 07 5:12 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Jake Peavy gave up eight runs in four innings for a crushing loss that prevented San Diego from pulling ahead of the Diamondbacks in the National League West race. The Padres ace had a stellar record against arch-rival Arizona, including 45 strikeouts in 26 innings and a 1.71 ERA, but pitched last night on only three days' rest.

Peavy had requested to play in the pivotal game, and started things off with a strikeout before being hit in the leg by a single and giving up a home run to Conor Jackson. Miguel Montero homered twice more for the D'backs, and Livan Hernandez chalked up the win, with Jose Valverde securing his 42nd save out of 49 attempts.
