CDC Must Stop Advocating Circumcision

Male procedure just as backward as reviled female version

Share

(Newser) – Virtually everyone in the Western world seems to agree that female circumcision is horrible. It greatly reduces sexual pleasure, violates individual autonomy, and provides no discernible health benefits. Well, all that is true of male circumcision, too, writes Ethan Epstein, yet the CDC is considering a plan to “promote routine circumcision” for infant boys. It’s “as degrading as it is illiberal.”

The push supposedly is intended to help reduce the spread of HIV. But the evidence behind that claim is incredibly dubious, and even if it did help, it “would remain an affront to human dignity,” Epstein writes for Spiked. Men deserve to control their body just as much as women. No one—not their parents, and certainly not the CDC—should involuntarily deny boys a lifetime of sexual pleasure.

Is there really any ethical difference between circumcising a baby against his will and circumcising an adult against his will? - Ethan Epstein

Despite the claims of medical fearmongers, fewer than 500,000 Americans are living with AIDs in a country of over 300 million people.
To recommend universal circumcision is a wild overreaction. - Ethan Epstein

Well, women should get used to seeing more of the non-cut. Apparently with a little routine cleaning, its not that bad to go un-cut. Reply

With hygenic people, it is fine, but most of the world is not. This is not a good message to send.

Not a reason to cut off a part of the body of a baby, Gabo. Many problems can come from being unhygienic, but you don't have the right to mutilate the genitalia of a baby, whether boy or girl.

@reasonator - it's not a "right", it's conscientious decision. Not to mention, it's the right decision in most cases. the science stands true, and it shows that circumcision prevents the spread of a lot of diseases, even when people are very hygienic about it. Stop ignoring the facts...

Your argument is flawed, Yourself. First, circumcision does nothing to stop the spread of "a lot of diseases." There are some claims that it helps to slightly reduce the chances of one disease -- AIDS. Emphasis on slightly. Let's say that the dubious claims that circumcision helps reduce the spread of AIDS is true. Even if it were true, a circumcised man still has to wear a condom. What, you think because a boy is circumcised he now doesn't have to worry about using a condom, or taking other protective measures? It just makes no sense to cut off a piece of a baby's body, when there is nothing wrong with that baby or that body part.
