Zombieland a Gory 'Joyride'

Woody Harrelson is great in one of the best new comedies, critics agree

(Newser) Zombieland is gory, but most critics think it's a rollicking good time. A sampling:

  • “Zombieland is a romance, a comedy, a road movie, and a freewheeling schlock horrorfest, all in one,” writes Stephanie Zacharek for Salon. “Its growling, groaning zombie villains aren't particularly menacing. This isn't so much an us-against-them parable as an inclusive joyride.”

  • "Woody Harrelson (it’s been far too long since we’ve seen him in anything good)" and "mousy sidekick" Jesse Eisenberg "make an excellent comedy duo—metal meets marshmallow," writes Kyle Smith in the New York Post.
  • “Rarely has such wanton, gleeful destruction been as unapologetically unleashed onscreen,” Luke Y. Thompson writes for E! “Zombieland looks on the bright side of an undead apocalypse.”
  • “Even at its worst, Zombieland is better than most movies of its kind—disgusting but not too disgusting, and with a few laughs,” writes Mick LaSalle in the San Francisco Chronicle.

This is sarcasm, right? God, Newser so needs a sarcasm font.

never would've guessed. the trailers made the film look so serious and scary. To be honest, i thought the formula was pretty risky too: a tightly marketed Tremors meets Resident Evil with a target audience so well defined you could practically count the number of tickets sold by simply reading the script.
