(Newser) – A Pennsylvania mom who hit the headlines last year for carrying a loaded handgun to her 5-year-old daughter's soccer games has been found shot dead with her husband in an apparent murder-suicide. The couple’s three children were home during the shootings but were unharmed, police told the Patriot-News. The pair had been having marital problems, neighbors said. Meleanie Hain's gun permit was revoked after other parents complained about her packing a pistol on her hip at games, but it was restored on appeal.

Introducing handguns into a society makes that society more dangerous -- period. That is the logic here. And the US 2nd Amendment is about maintaining militias to defend against tyrannical government. Handguns are not so useful when the ATF is coming to your cabin in the woods. Handguns are best for shooting some guy in the back because he cut you off in traffic . . .

Summary : Someone paranoid enough to pack heat to their kids soccer game was allowed to keep a weapon which became an option no-one - especially someone which kids - should really have to hand if they are that unstable. I wonder what the second amendment will mean to their three children? - won't be some abstract concept about freedom, potential threats, or the right to defend- that's for sure. Whatever you believe - spare them a thought - and think about this; 3 kids, at home during a shooting which results in parents death - and the focus of the article is obviously intent on trying to link in with the 'right to bear arms' issue raised by the recent presidential rally incidents. That's sad - the three children don't even get a look in other than to try and push a few emotional buttons to give the story wings. The media is a cold hard machine.

dax-this technology was tested by Police departments on Glocks. It works, but guess what it blocked users from using the gun in stressful situations, like say when someone is attacking you. Fingerprint triggers have also been looked at and rejected by Police, who have often had to use a partners gun in an emergency. Putting a lock on a fire extinguisher does not make sense either.

Well to be quite honest with you to me my family is more important then yours. I am sure if the choice came down to losing your family or a stranger you would take the stranger every time. You can say that she has a a psychological handicap if you want to but there are some crazy people in this world and amazingly some of them don't understand the art of talking things out, and if it comes to protecting my family then you do what you have to do to ensure their safety.

Wisdom Seeker - just a small point - I would argue that desensitisation and the rationalisation of inexcusable behaviour is probably at the core of a great deal of the issues I have seen you comment on with such passion at Newser. You may believe yourself to part of the cure - but talking like that about the death of two parents, leaving behind 3 very real kids - is not just gauche and flippant in the extreme - it turns you into the sort of desensitised monster you have rallied against with such anguish in the past. Actually there are good arguments for letting Iran have nuclear weapons. The biggest one being that countries with nuclear weapons are far less likely to start wars. The nut case soccer mom who needs to carry a gun on her hip dies in a murder suicide situation with her spouse. The only fortunate surprise is that they did not also kill all of their children as usually happens. She was killed by her husband, a legal gun carrying police officer. Why does that make HER a nut case? Her instinct that she needed a gun was apparent correct. And the statistics also say that having a car in your house will greatly increase the risk of death and injury. The presence of a bathtub in your house leads to a higher risk of death then a handgun.
