Taliban suspected after bomb rips through Peshawar market

(Newser) – A car bomb exploded today in a crowded bazaar in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's troubled North West Frontier Province, leaving at least 41 people dead and more than 100 injured. Many of the victims were in a passing bus that was reduced to a charred frame. Officials were uncertain whether the bomb was remote-controlled or triggered by a suicide bomber. The Taliban, bombarded by air forces in its tribal area stronghold, recently threatened attacks.

(NEWSER) - Big news from the BBC this morning: It says it has viewed a secret NATO report that suggests the Taliban will retake Afghanistan as soon as NATO exits the country, thanks in part to assistance it is receiving from Pakistan's ISI. The report was compiled following 27,000 interrogations of civilians and Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters, and the BBC describes it as "painful reading." Among its claims: That Pakistan is aware of the whereabouts of a number of high-ranking Taliban leaders; that some of these Taliban members live near ISI's Islamabad headquarters; and that Pakistan is actually manipulating and controlling the Taliban. "The Taliban are not Islam. The Taliban are Islamabad," said an al-Qaeda detainee, according to the report. More»

Afghan fighters oppose cease-fire proposed by Washington

(NEWSER) - Long-rumored talks between the US and Taliban officials just got started and are already faltering, MSNBC reports. Meeting in Qatar, Taliban representatives balked today at Washington's demand for a cease-fire before negotiating a prisoner swap. "Our stance is the same. We will announce a cease-fire when the foreign forces start their withdrawal from Afghanistan," said a Taliban source. (AP) - The deputy chief of the Pakistani Taliban announced today that the militant group was in peace talks with the government and an agreement to end its brutal 4-year insurgency was within striking distance. The statement by Malvi Faqir Mohammad, which appeared timed to exploit tensions between the Pakistan army and the US , will likely stoke further concerns in Washington over Pakistan's reliability as a long-term partner in the fight against extremists. (AP) - Hamid Karzai vowed today to confront the government in Islamabad over a devastating suicide bombing against a Shiite shrine in Kabul that he said originated on Pakistani soil. At least 56 people were killed in yesterday's bombing at the shrine, and four more when a second bomb hit a Shiite vehicle procession. A man claiming to be from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi al-Alami, a Pakistan-based splinter group of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi that has carried out attacks against Shiite Muslims in Pakistan, has called various media outlets to claim responsibility for the Kabul bombing.
