Be Smart, Barack: Turn Down the Prize

Obama accepting the Nobel will only reinforce right's caricatures

Share

(Newser) – Barack Obama, Nobel Peace Prize laureate? "They could have awarded it to Kylie Minogue and I wouldn’t have been half as surprised," writes Ben Brogan of the Telegraph, who thinks the "bunch of Scandinavian worthies" have made a silly, self-satisfied choice. Yet while the Norwegians have embarrassed themselves, the president doesn't have to—he's better than the caricature he's being made into, and he should tell the Nobel committee thanks but no thanks.

You can already see the conservative argument taking shape: "barely a senator, now barely a president," Obama is being hailed for his non-achievements by a collection of "Euro-weenies." The prize will only accelerate Obama's transformation from complex figure into "comedy confection—which he does not deserve," and gives his opponents "yet another bat to whack him with. If he's smart, Obama will turn the prize down, "even if he does look great in white tie and tails."

To reward him for a blank results sheet, to inflate him when he has no achievements to his name, makes a mockery of what, let’s face it, is an already fairly discredited process. - Ben Brogan, Daily Telegraph

Persoanlly I think it is a reflection of the worlds feelings that he has come out publicly to reduce nukes, scale down the occupying Army in Iraq attempt to bring Israel, Iran and other countries to the table to discuss various issues designed to scale down violence. Perhaps it is soon but is it ever to soon to have peace? I am well aware that GW Bush did all he could to destroy America in the eyes of the world and think Obama has done one hell of a job attempting to piece back together the damage done by Bush. Yes indeed I am glad for America he got the award and hope he indeed keeps it, well done Mr President you make 50% of your nation very proud, the other 50% just wants you dead or so it seems

@reader what exactly has he done though to deserve the prize? the nominations had to be by 01feb09. he was President for 11 days when he was nominated. Now all of the stuff you mentioned is great but he didn't do it in 11 days. Talking about doing things or saying your are going to do them is different then actually completing the task. This administration has set some very ambitious goals but has yet to reach any of them. If he had say accomplished something that he promised to do on the campaign trail that involves world peace then great take the award. On the other hand it is nice to see that our President is liked, and he should really thank W in his acceptance speech, for without him President Obama wouldn't even be considered for this award.
