(Newser) – Poor reviews proved no barrier to box office success this weekend as Couples Retreat did $35.3 million worth of business, dethroning Zombieland after a 2-week reign. The big news of the weekend was overachieving thriller Paranormal Activity, which broke a record for a feature playing on fewer than 200 screens, Variety reports. The top five:

  1. Couples Retreat, $35.3 million
  2. Zombieland, $15 million
  3. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, $12 million
  4. Toy Story/Toy Story 2 reissue, $7.6 million
  5. Paranormal Activity, $7.1 million

Paranormal and zombieland looks like its worth a rent....couples retreat looks bad. Real bad.

I second the statements on Paranormal Activity. It's a modern masterpiece of horror films, and I use that term carefully, but it is deserving of every praise. Zombieland was a good "fun" movie; it's not incredibly memorable or a milestone in film-making but it's a lot of good fun if you've got nothing better (like PA) to watch.

Thanks for the paranormal endorsements divetrader and thinker. I trust your judgment on a lot of things here so I doubt I'll be disappointed in this film.
