(Newser) – Michael Jackson's first posthumous single premiered this morning on his website, featuring backing vocals by his brothers. "This Is It" was written for the 1991 album Dangerous, but was cut before the album was released; it will be the only new song on a double CD coming later this month. The midtempo ballad is a plea to a lover, but the late King of Pop begins on a grander scale: "This is it, here I stand, I'm the light of the world." Click the link at left to listen.

The new single was released on Jackson's website at midnight.

There's a reason it was left off. Like much that Michael did post-1983, this song is a snoring two-chord verse, a soporific bridge and it bridges to...another bridge, then cheats by going back to snor-ey verse. Sure, lushing it up with texture is a nice misdirection, but at heart it's dull and lazy. Which is probably what I would have said in 1991, when Nirvana wrote better pop and had the good sense to give us a chorus.
