(Newser) – Efforts to cut off al-Qaeda's funding have been largely successful and the organization is now critically short of cash, according to the US Treasury. The group's "influence is waning" as the money dries up, according to one official who monitors terrorist financing, noting that al-Qaeda has already issued several appeals for funds this year. He warns, however, that the Taliban is in much better shape financially because of its involvement in the drug trade, the BBC reports.

er - unfortunately the drug in question is opium - or rather the poppys. Nothing stopping the drug companies from buying it all up and using it in legitimate medications though.

Good strategy. If you can't win the war starve them out.

Looks like they'll have to a lamington drive or two. For those who don't know (and I imagine that'd be most of you) a lamington drive is a bake sale where only lamingtons are sold. What is a lamington? This: http://images.google.com.au/im... Now, if they add heroin...I'm sure they'll be up and slaughtering in no time.
