'Abortion Addict' Ended 15 Pregnancies

In controversial memoir, Irene Vilar says legal abortion saved her life

(Newser) – Once an “abortion addict,” Irene Vilar is making waves on both sides of the contentious debate with her memoir of the 15 pregnancies she terminated—including one she had forgotten about. One pro-life blogger called for her to be thrown in jail; as for the other side, “the majority of pro-choicers—and I don't blame them—are somewhat confused,” Vilar tells the Los Angeles Times.

Vilar, granddaughter of a famous Puerto Rican nationalist, now has two daughters; she says the abortions she had between ages 16 and 33 were partly a result of her 11-year marriage to a man who saw children as an end to freedom. She feels she let the feminist movement down: “They risked their lives to give me this, and I abused that right.” But Vilar also says she would have gotten the abortions through any means necessary, and credits legal abortion with saving her life.

Back in the early nineties there was a large anti-abortion march on Washington with many protesters carrying signs promoting adoption over abortion. It made the front page of the Chicago Tribune. In section 2 of the same day's paper was an article about a dozen Chicago babies that nobody was adopting. When will these thousands of protesters step up and put their money where their mouth is instead of just trying to control other people?

This is in reply to jamerican, do you realize that everytime a man has an orgasm even if he ejaculates in a woman,and gets her pregnant he still has killed millions of half babies just wanting to be born. Also everytime a woman performs fellatio on a man a swallows the result it is basically cannibalism. This IS a disturbing story. Just as disturbing as those mormon nutjob Duggars that have had 18 births. This lady is obviously not a normal user of abortion services and has mental issues. To use her in an argument about abortion is like using Charlie Manson in an argument about Beatles music. 99.9999999999 percent of abortion users turn to it as a last resort. It is a low point in their life and abortion is a grim but necessary option for them in their time of need. @Thinker: There are a number of other less expensive birth control methods including hormonal implants, IUDs, and yes, even female condoms. All of these are very effective, and the first two can be very long lasting and economical.

They do put up a facade of functionality but it is done through the help of family, friends, neighbors and strangers, which I don't see as more virtuous than getting help from 'we the people.' Meanwhile they are making choices that negatively impact the children such as shunning breast feeding in their quest to have another pregnancy to brag about. This family is careful to put a fine face on the Qiverful movement but the older children are raising the younger ones and in the end is being raised by a teen aged sister any better than being raised by a teen aged mother?

If the Christians are right about life beginning at conception, then the babies went right to Heaven and are now with God. A better place than here. Why complain? But I don't think the Christians are right about the conception thing ... the Bible says that all the Christians, dead and alive will be taken up when Christ returns (what they refer to as the Rapture) but it also says "woe to pregnant women" which can only mean that the unborn will NOT be taken up and, therefore, probably don't have souls until birth. So, if you believe the Bible, abortion isn't murder because unborn children won't be taken up during the Rapture. Reply
