Both McCanns Now Suspects in Maddy Case
Gerry McCann, the father of missing British girl Madeleine McCann, arrives at the police station in Portimao, southern Portugal, for questioning Friday, Sept. 7 2007. His wife Kate McCann was formally named as a suspect by Portuguese police Friday, as relatives said they feared she would be charged...   (Associated Press)

Portuguese police added Gerry McCann as a suspect in his daughter Madeleine's disappearance yesterday, 12 hours after naming his wife. No charges have been brought against the couple, who were questioned separately over 24 hours, and released. Authorities offered Kate McCann a plea bargain, saying she would serve just two years in prison if she admitted to accidentally killing her daughter, the BBC reports.

The theory has the couple hiding the body temporarily, then moving it later, using the rented car in which police said traces of the 4-year-old's blood was found. A BBC correspondent questioned whether such a deal is permissible under  Portuguese law. The McCanns denied the charges, and vowed not to let the accusations derail the search for Maddy.
