Vicious Beating of NY Gay Caught on Tape

Jack Price remains in coma

(Newser) – The brutal hate-crime beating of a gay man on a deserted Queens street was captured on a neighborhood surveillance video. Jack Price, 49, tries repeatedly to escape his attackers who continue to punch and stomp him on the tape. "From beginning to end, it was absolutely horrible," Price's sister-in-law told the New York Daily News. Two men have been arrested in the attack. Price remains in critical condition in a coma.

His jaw and several ribs were broken in the attack and both lungs collapsed. "It's a despicable crime, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "The individual was attacked simply for his orientation, and we're just not going to tolerate it in this city."

No, If a white person is beaten because they are white, it is just as despicable. But the fact is that the overwhelming majority of people in this country are white. And frankly, white people aren't at as high of a risk of being beaten because of their race as blacks are, and straight people aren't at as high of a risk of getting beaten because they are straight. clinging, dont even try to give us the same old bullshit "what about white people" argument. yes, white people are occasionally targeted for their race, but dont even pretend that the number of white people who are victims of reverse hate crimes comes even remotely close to the sort of physical persecution that gays and blacks have endured at the hands of white people. i have no problem with white people being protected by hate crime laws too, if they are attacked for being white. but white straight people are not who these laws were created for. i am a white person and it infuriates and disgusts me when straight white people, especially straight white men, complain about how they're being victimized. give me an effing break. Maybe you should look at the statistics b/f you make blanket statements about the number of whites who are targeted for "hate crimes". The fact that a person commits a violent crime against another indicates hate-regardless of race, creed, color, sex preference. Most crimes are hateful. However, we live in an uber PC society that doesn't want to face the truth..that evil/hate exists and are what motivates some people. That goes against everything our "civil" society is based upon. Labeling actions/people/situations makes them easier to accept/explain-even when the explanation defies logic.

@philly - 1) Bullshit. Every violent crime is not indicative of hate. And you ask for statistics on what armywife said, yet you don't provide your own. Fuck a statistic; there are some things on which there are no statistics and there are some things for which anyone with common sense doesn't need a statistic. Whites who are victims of larceny, robbery, etc. are victims because they are easy targets, not because they are white. It is because they are the ones who are the most afraid, the least street-wise and the most likely to have something of value to steal. If they are killed during the crime, it is most likely because they struggled or the criminal did not want to leave a witness alive. Blacks, in general, do not go around killing white people simply because they are white. They kill them because of opportunity....the white person was there, the white person had the valuable and the white person does not fight back, GENERALLY speaking. Oh, btw, I'm white, too, but I just happen not to be blind to the crimes my race has committed against other races for hundreds of years simply because my race considers the other race unequal.

Rakewell, so Christians ARE following all the laws and rules in Leviticus now? I thought that was old news and Go(o)d made the New (and Improved) testament to clear up the confusion. Because according to Leviticus there area LOT of things people shouldn't be doing: piercings and tatoos, eating the flesh of an animal with a split hoof, casting of lots, etc.

So no calls even in jest to investigate what this person might have done to deserve this. I do seem to remember when the school bus beating of the white kid by the black kids was posted there where calls to the source's motives to post the video, how it was being protested against, and there was an actual discussion as to whether that was a hate crime because we as the posters didn't know the entire story. So I see this story and none of that, nope it's hate crime all the way, hands down. I don't approve of the beating and I am for gays rights but comparing this thread to that thread you can see a difference in the way certain crimes against people are treated by the public. Reply

@dark don't know maybe he said something about the guy's mother, tried to take something from him or generally was just an ass to the two guys. Chances are it was becasue he was gay, I was just making note that when it happened on the school bus there were calls on to hold off judgement because we didn't know the whole story and maybe the kid did something to deserve it. I don't see that happening with this story, and I was wondering why.

@dawgs - Good point, dawgs. It is easy to assume because the man was gay, he was targeted simply for passing by. Most likely, words were exchanged. I say this because I cannot count on 2 hands how many times I have left gay establishments to find guys loitering in the parking lot looking for trouble. I kinda always expected to be a victim like this because I won't take any shit. Some dumbass str8 man yells "dykes" at me and my date when we leave a gay bar, I yell something back, like, "Hey, very observant! Can you pee standing up, too, or do you still squat?" One girl wouldn't go out with me again because of this. She said I was going to get us killed. Fortunately, for me, most str8 men loitering around gay establishments are looking for gay men to beat up and more often than not, after getting a blow job first. Anyone who wants to ask for statistics on that can kiss my ass since I failed to notate every time a different gay man told me a story of getting picked up while leaving a gay bar for some good ol' fashioned mano-a-mano loving only to have his ass kicked afterward. *Most* of the so called str8 men who do this are not trying to kill anyone. They want their jollies and then they are angry at themselves afterward. But every once in a while, one comes along who gets angrier at himself than the rest do. That being said, I will say it does not matter what the white kid on that bus said nor does it matter what the gay man in this case said; a near-death beating is uncalled for and the perpetrators need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The Hate crime part comes into play if the perpetrator expresses in any way that he is beating the victim *because* of race, creed, color, nationality *or* sexual orientation and as far as I am concerned, if the white kid on that bus was beaten *because* the perpetrators hate whites, then it is a hate crime.

At the risk of being objectionable... Gays are not a race. Linguistic and political manipulation will not ever make Gays a race. Homophobia is a medical condition. It is an allergic condition triggered by exposure to Homosexuality. The best way to recover from the condition is to remove the allergen.
