Thousands Marry in Mass Moonie Wedding

40,000 gather for blessing of Sun Myung Moon in Korea

Share

(Newser) – He is nearly 90 years old, but Sun Myung Moon—cult leader, Washington Times founder, self-proclaimed Messiah—can still draw a crowd. The leader of the Unification Church led a mass wedding for some 40,000 people outside of Seoul today, on the campus of, yes, Sun Moon University. It was the largest of the cult's so-called "blessing ceremonies" in a decade, with some couples renewing previous vows and others entering marriages arranged by Moon himself.

The brides, from the US and Europe as well as Korea and Japan, wore white wedding gowns or Japanese kimonos, while the grooms all sported identical black suits, red ties, and white shawls. One Brazilian woman, whose husband was chosen for her by church leaders, was overcome by the event. "It's the realization of a dream I've had for so long," she said. "Taking part in a mass wedding only adds to the profoundness. I barely have the words to describe what I feel."

Moon, a convicted felon, continues to sprad his growth world-wide, owns Wash. Times rightwing rag, and has close connections with--North Korea. Remains a cult no matter what is said and declared. If Moon considers himself son of god, then are his kids grandson's of god or what? Reply

Look, the Unification Church (Moon's church) is no better or worse than any other religion or church. Seriously, anyone who believes in a god or a religion or a church of any kind has no justification criticizing this religion ... all religions are based on myth and silly superstition, and all are equally dumb. Thinker, you're saying all religions are the same. Didn't we go through this before? Religions vary from ... to Buddhism to Quakers to ... to Scientology. I'd like to know where the Moonies fit on this scale.

Ah but that myth and silly superstition bring strength and comfort. That's the goal, to get people to find hope and courage to make it through their days. Even if it's just a veil, it works.

I'd say the moonies are a lot closer to scientology, shonangreg.
