Coast Guard searches waters off South Carolina

(Newser) – The Coast Guard is searching off the coast of South Carolina for the pilot of an F-16 involved in a collision with another fighter jet last night during a training exercise. The other pilot involved managed to safely return to Shaw Air Force Base and is being examined by doctors. Pilots from the base have been conducting nighttime exercises this week using night vision equipment.

(NEWSER) - As the Dec. 31 US troop withdrawal deadline looms, Iraq is looking to purchase as many as 36 US fighter jets and other air-defense systems. The purchase, which will cost billions, could help cement ties between Iraq and the US and, Washington hopes, keep Iran at bay. The move comes after Baghdad froze plans to buy 18 F-16s earlier this year, due to the Arab Spring unrest. 'Sheen' Used for Libya Psy-Ops

(NEWSER) - Charlie Sheen won't likely bring his " Violent Torpedo of Truth" tour to Libya, but military flights bearing his name are doing a tour of their own. A Dutch radio buff monitoring and tweeting military communications has discovered that Libya flights by an Air Force cargo plane configured to broadcast psy-ops message have been going by the call sign "Sheen," Gawker reports. The EC-130 aircraft has been warning Libyan ships to remain in port or risk retaliation from coalition aircraft, Wired notes. Radar surveillance flights, meanwhile, have been given "Cylon" call signs—the name of the warlike cyborgs from Battlestar Galactica. More»

Military: Don't Use Facebook Places in War Zones

Commanders fear social media could reveal locations to the enemy

(NEWSER) - The Air Force is warning personnel that while geolocation features like Facebook Places or Foursquare may be a great way to let your buddies know where you're having lunch, you shouldn't use them in war zones. "Careless use of these services by airmen can have devastating operations security and privacy implications," the Air Force warned on its internal website earlier this month. The Army plans to circulate a similar warning to troops about the social media features, AP reports. More»

Glitch Boots 50 Nukes Offline

Commanders unable to communicate with ninth of arsenal for nerve-wracking hour

(NEWSER) - A hardware glitch knocked 50 nuclear missiles—a ninth of America's land-based arsenal—offline for nearly an hour over the weekend. Commanders at an Air Force base in Wyoming found themselves unable to communicate with the missiles as engineers scrambled to find out what the problem was, the Atlantic reports. Officials say there is no evidence of foul play, and the missiles could still have been launched by an airborne command and control platform if necessary. More»
