Air Force Pulls Video After Marines Complain

Recruiting vid says airman 'in better shape'

(Newser) – The Air Force hastily pulled down its latest recruiting video yesterday in response to a complaint from a high-ranking Marine Corps official. In the video, an Air Force instructor boasts that his charges leave basic training “in better shape than most Marines.” Marines spotted it on the Air Force website and began e-mailing it to each other. “You have to understand, Marines are very proud,” said the corps' sergeant major, the highest-ranking enlisted Marine, “and will defend the honor of our Corps at all costs.”

An Air Force spokeswoman said the video was being removed only until its claim that the Air Force had the highest PT standards of any branch of service could be verified. But she said if it went back up, the “better shape” comment would be edited out. She said it was a “personal opinion” of that instructor, and “in no way intended to disparage Marines.”

Incident two: A black kid who lived in our dorm area (very cool guy) got jumped, beaten and robbed by a group of Marines as he walked back to the barracks after getting a bite at McDonalds and took a shortcut through the wooded area past the Marine barracks. WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER DOES THAT SHOW?

Incident three: While walking home after beer and pizza and Monday night football at the E-club, my friend and I suddenly found ourselves surrounded by Marines who wanted to fight. The ringleader, who towered over me, pointed toward the Marine barracks and told us to go over there and fight them. I looked that way and saw a bunch of Marines hiding in the bushes to waylay us. I looked at the head jerk and told him I would be glad to fight his sorry ass one-on-one but I wasn't going to take on his f-ing platoon. I told him to follow me up the hill to Navy country if he wanted a fight so bad. He declined. AGAIN, WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER DOES THAT SHOW? These three incidents left an indelible impression on me regarding Marines. I know it's prejudicial, but my experiences regarding them is that they are a-holes.

I've heard the stories from both sides. The Marines hated the Navy and the Navy hated the Marines. Never understood it but your little anecdotal fairytales didn't occur in a vacuum. There was probably just as much crap coming from the Navy guys as the Marines. Just add this to the myriad lists of things you don't understand.

I'm going to neither agree nor disagree with you here, but I will remark that all modes of willful conformity (as required in para-military and military organization, churches, political parties, et al) are a stripe of (self- or otherwise) imposed brainwashing, and brainwashed people are not going to be the independent thinkers and good humored folks that are going to make satisfying debaters. I gather that deep down, you yearn for constructive debate, but fall into delivering bellicose juvenalia instead because you haven't sharpened the articulation of your thinking well enough. And your obvious blasting of Jayster indicts you of the same as which you accuse him, only you like to use bigger, fancier words. I will say this, I haven't been on here long at all, and I'm noticed Jayster as a staple of controversy in this community. But this time, I personally feel he has a point. Being military myself (Army), I've come across many service members (mostly Marines) who hate anything that doesn't walk or talk like them. That's not pride or group think, that's lack of a greater moral foundation. I got all the brainwash crap in my training and everyday from my superiors and peers as well, but the most influential voice in my head was that of my mother and grandmother who taught me how to be a decent human being and of my father who enforced it.

Interesting observations. Not necessarily spot-on, but your "psychoanalytical approach" to explain my comments probably holds some water. Your explanation about me taking my "vituperation" to those I oppose in order to elicit a reaction is undeniably true. Of course, the same could be said of about half of the posts on Newser. What gives me more fuel for my furnace, so to speak, is that there are way more people here on the liberal side of the fence--which means that when I spout off, I'm going to naturally draw a lot more ire than those of the prevailing opinion. I also enjoy the fact that people here are forever trying to attribute thoughts and opinions to me that are patently false. My presence on Newser are twofold: One: I like to make crack jokes, sometimes with the intent to incite, sometimes for my own amusement and possibly that of others. Two: To try and educate people about "truths" that I feel are overlooked and need to be stated. I actually do enjoy "constructive" debate, but have found that in this forum, it is next to impossible. The vitriol, arrogance, blindness and chauvinism here pretty much rule healthy debate out altogether.

Half the people in here have no original ideas and are convinced of the left, right paradigm. Constantly entertaining for those who actually know the political spectrum. However, in my opinion this is a good thing. Let them stew in their false beliefs and perceived destruction of the republican party. Meanwhile the renewal the values this country was founded on continue. Find democracy in the constitution. You can't. Anywhere. That's what makes me laugh about the the coverage of the tea parties. The polarized left see a bunch of stuck old conservatives, when in truth alot of young people are turning to libertarian values and are lumped in with the republican crowd. Who wants more government? Wow. What a thread. I will put this in. I believe that many of the problems for returning vets in modern war is the political correctness of not allowing "hate" at the enemy. A different race and/or religion has been trying to kill said soldier 24/7 for two years and now he is supposed to come back and be all love and roses. I know old WW2 guys that still hated the Germans and Japanese when they died as old men. WW2 and WW1 had the US covered with propaganda posters showing the Germans, Italians, and Japanese as monsters we rightly should hate in order to promote more homeland industrial production and more soldiers for the war. I know several Viet guys that would rather swallow a bullet than go eat in a local Vietnamese restaurant. I will not fault a soldier that still hates his enemy. I have never been in a situation where a people were trying to kill me. Jayster, perhaps the Marines speaking of "gook bitches" had seen horrors you don't even want to imagine. I think that this one incident is one you can drop. But that is only my opinion and you are certainly entitled to your opinions and feelings. Reply

Still, our hate for them and their hate for us constantly turns out to be bullsh*&. Sooner or later we will realize that we're all the same. I think we're getting closer. Every war we come back from gets us there faster. The barriers are breaking down, look around. We haven't solved the race issue but most of the world isn't putting people in slavery because of the color of their skin. 30 years ago we hated the communists. what do you expect...the military isnt exactly full of our countrys brightest stars...most of the marines i met became marines because they had nowhere else to go. not taking anything from them except their ability to think for themselves, because i think its one of the greatest sacrifices someone could ever make, but there is much smarter ways to win wars...this is by no means to make anyone mad, im just stating what ive personally experienced. this is also coming from a son of a vietnam vet who served for two tours. im sure ill get some static for this post, but sorry, there is some truth to what jayster and many others are saying. my sympathy goes out to the ones who are mentally broken for serving our country. I wonder how many of you can walk in their shoes. The 101st and 82nd Airborne. The Marine Corps. And other specialized teams. We can all spout off on your opinions. But until you put on a uniform. You arent allowed to judge a mans mental state or why he joined. That goes from those who served in 1776 or 2009. People like Pass lived it and dealt w/it one on one. Through all American Wars there have been emotional trauma. It doesnt make them deranged killers. Yes,we are taught to kill. Thats a job of a soldier. I still say most people have forgotten 9/11. Over 3000 dead individuals.What did they do that morning to deserve to die? And what did you want us to do. Which leads me to who was going out to extract that "pound of flesh" You? Reply

I could never ever walk in their shoes and never repay that "pound of flesh" However that being said its a two way street. I choose not to pick up a gun or put myself in an organization where I would have to blindly follow orders that perhaps conflicted with my ideals. As such I AM allowed to judge those that do. I love my country, but would rather the choice to kill for it be my own (and what an extreme situation that would take). To do so in any other way is to make myself a proxy to anothers will, a will that could in fact be corrupt. Vietnam was a waste of life(and a farce). Korea was a waste of life. War is a waste of life. Period. I have not forgotten 9/11 and wont anytime soon. Can you honestly tell me the military actions we've undertaken in the name of that tragedy have been justified? Killing in the name of your country is still killing. Violence begets violence and always will, Mao was wrong.

infantry based boot camp is the roughest...that would be the MARINES, and the ARMY...as for the rest, not as rough...BUT if you make it through any of them you are in good shape regardless.....Tactics, overall training that the differing branches use are more geared to the objective they usually play in a war situation...in general...small arms training in boot camp is vastly different, more in infantry , less in the others, ...marines or army does not learn shipboard firefighting in boot....why would they...but the navy and coast gaurd damn sure do, same applies with other mission specific aspects....all in all no branch is superior to the other..it's a matter of the right tool for the right job..never use a hammer to to tighten a bolt or nut..use a wrench..never use a wrench to bust rocks, use a sledge hammer..so to speak Reply

Would love to see how a South African Defence Force trained Recce( Special Force) soldier ( eighties bush war Angola) would match up against a US marine.I think the Recces would be far more superior in terms fitness level s, soldiering skills and intelligence.I think the average South Arican Defence Force soldier ( Eighties) would be more like the American trained marines of today. To those who say that the Marine Corps are filled with the retards and the left over scraps of society, do a quick check on your figures and you will see that the Marine Corps has the highest percentage per captia of Enlisted with degrees. We have the system of leadership and "NCO orientated leadership" that the other services only dream about. The Army is even changing the way they do business because our model has worked so well. We are the smallest service, arn't even our own branch (we belong to the Department of the Navy) get the smallest amount of funds, get the oldest equipment, and still - we are in more places as one time putting boots on deck and rounds down range than any of the other services. Sometimes I wish I WOULD have joined the Air force...then instead of spending 7 months in an old iraq barracks or 7 months floating around on ol' LHD-7 "Iwo Jima" - I could be living it up at some 4 star hotel getting fat and nasty while banking the per diem...we all have our little part to play - myself and the rest of Uncle Sam's misguided children - we'll be on the ground getting things done. You fly boys can stick to the skys and go home and eat your hot catered meals, just don't forget to put that pretty orange glowbelt on before you go anywhere..... Reply
