Air Force Pulls Video After Marines Complain

Recruiting vid says airman 'in better shape'

(Newser) – The Air Force hastily pulled down its latest recruiting video yesterday in response to a complaint from a high-ranking Marine Corps official. In the video, an Air Force instructor boasts that his charges leave basic training “in better shape than most Marines.” Marines spotted it on the Air Force website and began e-mailing it to each other. “You have to understand, Marines are very proud,” said the corps' sergeant major, the highest-ranking enlisted Marine, “and will defend the honor of our Corps at all costs.”

An Air Force spokeswoman said the video was being removed only until its claim that the Air Force had the highest PT standards of any branch of service could be verified. But she said if it went back up, the “better shape” comment would be edited out. She said it was a “personal opinion” of that instructor, and “in no way intended to disparage Marines.”

Thanks for saying better than I could. I was not in the military, but I have two Marine Uncles, one in WW2 and one in Viet Nam. I also had a cousin in the Marines who went to Viet Nam and never came back. Thanks. For Everything.

EILEENROCKS, I agree that it describes conservative media, but I wouldn't paint Republicans with that broad brush. I think you meant the former, not the latter, anyway, am I wrong? JAYSTER999, thanks for the thoughtful response. You're alright, as I suspected, and I do feel your disappointment when those in positions of honor in uniform demonstrate their unworthiness, FISKEBOLLE, I'm still waiting, and YEAHSAIDIT, I hope you got from Jayster999's thoughtful response to me that I wasn't just 'blasting' him, but was rather calling him out to raise the bar on his discourse--because (I hope it obvious), I believed he had is in him.

(NEWSER) - Defense Department rules are entering the 21st century. The Pentagon will recommend to Congress today that women in the military should be allowed to serve in a greater number of positions close to front lines. The AP notes that the rule shift would formalize a practice that has already been happening: Though women are technically prohibited from serving in combat battalions, over the past decade many have served at the front lines in roles including medic, military police officer, intelligence officer, and helicopter pilot. The military has previously dodged the rule by "attaching" such women to battalions, rather than formally assigning them, meaning the women would not receive credit for serving in combat arms. More»

Hillary Clinton calls incident possible war crime

(NEWSER) - Investigators have identified the four Marines shown in a video apparently urinating on Taliban corpses, and they could be charged today, CBS News reports. The military has interviewed at least two of the men on the matter as officials scramble to address its fallout. "Anyone, anyone found to have participated or know about it, having engaged in such conduct, must be held fully accountable," said Hillary Clinton yesterday, calling the incident a potential war crime. (NEWSER) - Dumb: Posing for a joke photo with the kind of casket used to bring war dead back to the US. Dumber: Putting it on Facebook. The Air Force is investigating a photograph of airmen posing around a casket in which a colleague wrapped in chains plays dead with a noose around his neck. The photo was sent to the Air Force Times by an appalled sergeant who had been alerted by a former soldier who spotted it on a friend's Facebook page. More»

(NEWSER) - Lance Cpl. Glenn Payne used to wear a bracelet carrying the name of a close friend who was killed in action in Afghanistan—until he was ordered to take it off.
