(Newser) – With skeptics in full throat, the balloon boy family promised a "big announcement" today. "I'd like to speak to everybody about a few things," dad Richard Heene said this morning. He scheduled a 1pm news conference, then postponed it til later in the day after soliciting reporters' questions in a box. "Absolutely no hoax," he said. So who knows, maybe the announcement of a reality show? The family has tried twice before to get one going, reports the Denver Post.

"They did approach us months ago to do a show, and we passed," a TLC spokeswoman tells the newspaper. The family also worked with the company that makes Wife Swap, on which they appeared twice, to create a show that focused just on them. "At one point in time, we had a show in development with the Heenes," says an RDF Media spokeswoman. "We are no longer in active development with the family."

Make them pay the county the millions that were spent on chasing down the balloon and finding the kid. If it were in my town I would be at every council meeting until the bill was sent. How many homeless families would that money have fed?

It's still a story because there is considerable doubt as to whether the event was genuine. In my opinion, the doubt is justified. Most of my doubt still springs from R Heene's immediate reactions to his son's 'show' line in the CNN bit. It was the reaction of a man caught in the corner. I'm surprised he didn't say "Damn, we're in a tight spot!'' It would be nice if it dropped out of the cycle, because no-one wants to believe that a person would use their children in such a way as to further their own ends. But if it is a hoax, the man has to be held to account for his actions.

Put them in the same box as Kim Kandashian and Family, Paris Hilton, Octomom, Jon and Kate, Lindsay Lohan and last but not least Sarah Palin!
