Iran Releases Newsweek Reporter

Humanitarian considerations thought to have played role

Share

(Newser) – Iran set free yesterday the Newsweek journalist it had held prisoner since the disputed June elections. Maziar Bahari was released on $300,000 bail, likely because of humanitarian conditions—the magazine reports that the 42-year-old is expecting his first child October 26, and the baby's mother has had serious health issues. Tehran was mum on reasons for the release, but Bahari's case was mentioned during recent US-Iran talks in Geneva.

We are relieved that Newsweek journalist Maziar Bahari is home with his family today. We would like to thank all of those who supported Maziar through this long and uncertain period. - Newsweek statement on Bahari's release

Always a good thing when the CIA gets their people out of sticky situations. The Iranians aren't stupid. They are stalling as long as they can before the Israelis nuke their asses back to the Stone Age. Reply

So many points of faith in one post. Are you trying for a spot on the Colbert Report, or are these tenets of your religion, Observer? .................................................. You believe Bahari was working for the CIA because the Iranians said so? Because he "confessed" while in their custody? Because the CIA does have *some spies* working under cover as journalists? That is quite a statistical stretch. .................................. And what are the Israeli's going to do to Iran? If Iran has the technical know-how to build an atomic bomb now, hitting the two DEEPLY buried sites will accomplish what, if they can even be destroyed by current bunker busters . . . ? ........................ I'm not defending Iran and its nuclear program, I'm just wondering what your point is.

Newsweek must have posted that Ahmadinejad would not become Man of the Year unless he released Bahari. Reply
