Michael Moore Attracts His Own Gadflies

Veritable 'cottage industry' of negative docs on documentarian

(Newser) – Michael Moore makes a living speaking truth to power, and an assortment of other filmmakers are lining up to speak truth to him. “There's actually more films made attacking me than films I've made,” he tells the Wall Street Journal. They include Fahrenhype 9/11, Celsius 41.11, Michael & Me, and Me & Michael. The standout is Shooting Michael Moore, and not just because of the title. The filmmaker actually knows Moore.

Kevin Leffler is a registered Democrat, Michigan native, and high school classmate of Moore’s. “I am doing exactly what Mike would do, except I am doing it to him,” he says. Leffler discovered that a Moore foundation once owned stock in the likes of Halliburton, and has interviewed subjects in past Moore docs he says were manipulated. Shooting Michael Moore, conceived in 2004, had a brief run last year, but not before it helped ruined Leffler’s marriage. “It wasn't the only factor, but it played a role.”

Legit documentaries show BOTH SIDES of a story. The films Moore makes are propaganda movies and opportunistic. Reply

Not necessarily . I'd say a good documentary can show one side but show it objectively. I'm not saying moore is very objective but your analysis is wrong. And at the very least, his documentaries are thought provoking. Don't be ignorant of questions just because of the source. Even those FOX news reactionaries accidentally ask an intelligent question here and there. Maybe instead of giving a shit about Moore, this guy should try to make a documentary about how capitalism is just fine and we're all gonna go back to the 1950's to refute Moore's recent film.

I'd go further than 'not necessarily' and say 'bullshit'. Docs are no longer necessarily about balance, they are about analysis and opinion and correcting the ledger. We USED to be able to hang our hats on news for balance, so documentaries were deeper examinations and investigations of things. But the days of balanced news are dead. As news changed, so did the doc. It has become, in large part, the anti-news, showing you what the news media don't.

Please, documentary just means that it isn't a movie--it's non fiction. Like books are either non-fiction or fiction. Do non-fiction books tell both sides of a story? Nothing tells both sides of the story, because you can't know both sides. As for Michael Moore? He's Ann Coulter with two hundred more pounds and no weave. Meaning he makes his money being as outrageously left as she is right. Who cares as long as you have the ability to see that neither is right, but way more interesting than the boring, old truth.

Your right, he doesn't expose anything that any of us could not see plainly if we didn't look for ourselves he just gets a group to all acknowledge it at the same time often exploiting the same people he claims to be helping. You are both wrong. Michael Moore makes you uncomfortable because he has the courage to expose things you two would ignore (and then feign surprise when it hit you personally). You don't have to like the man; You don't have to believe everything he says. But have the honesty to acknowledge that the OPPOSITE of what he stands for ALSO STINKS, and that somewhere somehow we have to make a move to a better way.

Michael Moore is bringing to people's attention the questions that need to be asked. Is his stuff somewhat biased? Yes. Is it opinion rather than a documentary. Again, yes. But he is asking questions others are not, and bringing them to the public's attention. On top of that, he does do his research, and he does attempt to let the other side have a say. It seems somewhat suspicious to me that there are so many anti-Moore films yet I haven't once seen someone on the other side debate him or go on his shows. Reply

Hanity is up there with Rush and Bill-O in terms of fairness, hybrid, I doubt he gave Moore a change to get a word in edgewise. That said, I didn't know about this and will check it out when I have time.

The Hannity was interesting, especially when Moore questioned Hannity about attending Church every Sunday, and when Moore asked him what the sermon was Hannity had no clue, even thougt it was two days past the sermon.

Michael Moore is a pathetic opportunist. All of this slobs contentions about Canada are flat-out lies. As a Canadian watching this garbage, I get incensed that people might actually believe some of it. Guns are available in Canada? Right Moore !!!! Go try to find one. I guarantee you that if you went looking for a handgun in Canada, all you would find is the cops. Some gang idiots find them in the States and bring them back here, but trust me when I tell you, they were most definitely not purchased in any store around here. As for the rosy health care picture he paints about Canada, I say give your head a shake. I personally needed an MRI and it took 18 months to get one. We have "rationed health care" not "universal health care". Free health care you say? On top of the outrageous taxes we pay to support health care, Ontario levied a $900.00 per person surcharge. Recently we discovered that the money was outright stolen and they won't even allow an investigation. Google "ehealth scandal" and read it for yourself.
