Female Saudi Journalist Gets 60 Lashes for Sex Show

During episode, man boasted of conquests

(Newser) – A female Saudi journalist has been sentenced to 60 lashes for her involvement in a TV show that featured a man detailing his sexual conquests. The court also banned Rosanna Al-Yami from leaving the country for two years, sources tell CNN. She is believed to be the first Saudi journalist ever sentenced to lashes, though it's not clear she was even involved in the controversial episode.

Al-Yama works for the Lebanese Broadcasting Corp. as a show coordinator, but she apparently had no direct involvement in the episode of "A Thick Red Line" that caused all the fuss. No matter—the judge sentenced her as a "deterrence," she tells the AP. "I am too frustrated and upset to appeal the sentence," she adds. As for the man who boasted of his sex life on the show: he's currently serving a 5-year sentence.

They are one of the most backwards and oppressive regimes around, the bulk of terrorist money comes from them and we all kowtow to them because they are drowning in oil. Oh, and get this: Last week they bitched that if the world reduced its oil consumption, they want compensation for loss of income. Can I just say I agree - But be very clear - Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. There is no connection between the people and the rulers, other than one group rules and other suffers the consequences. The courts, the military, everything that in the West is normally a reflection or representation of how at least some of the country feels, is totally based on the whims and opinions of the ruling family. You have never met an ordinary Saudi - because a passport is a privilege, not a right. So all I'm saying is this - you're dealing with the richest medieval kingdom in the world, and the same way you can't blame the 'serfs' for the crusades - keep a clear sympathy for the Saudi people as a whole as what you are seeing here has nothing to do with them - but they are forced to live with the consequences. Be thankful you live in a democracy and maybe, respect what you have - all too soon it can be taken away and then this is the result.

Its a damned shame the "conservatives" in our country will never realize that when any oil is pumped out of an American well its sold on the worldwide oil market. Additionally, we don't have the capacity to refine more oil than we refine at this time. So, with our current reserves and capacity, it would take 10 years to build the refineries and extract the crude, and then the oil would just be sold to the highest bidder.

Reader8343944. You forget coal and natural gas which are actually more important down the road. Our own oil refiners are not spending money on refurbishing our domestic refineries for a few basic reasons (1) it cuts into their obscene short-term profits (2) there isn't all that much oil left that is easy to get that is of a grade that can be refined with existing refineries anyway, and (3) they know the feds will jump in when an emergency happens and pay for it with taxpayers money if necessary. Meanwhile the Saudis are completing a brand new refinery so they can sell us gasoline directly rather than crude. They will get to save on shipping costs and pocket the obscene profits that we used to get. That will put us in even worse shape. On the other hand, we have coal and natural gas inside our own borders that would last for maybe a couple of centuries assuming we decide to use it. All we need is a coherent, intelligent, pragmatic, and unpoliticized national energy policy. Reply

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. (1) Coal, while worse that oil with regards to greenhouse gasses is bountiful in the US. We burn coal for electricity NOW and we will for the forseeable future unless you want to build many dozens of fission reactors. (2) Coal produces more than twice the greenhouse gasses of natural gas, which is so cheap and plentiful in the USA that we have stopped looking for it. (3) Renewables don't cut it unless you want to plunge the whole country into mass poverty, and even then there is a huge load levelling and distribution problem, not the mention the enviromental impacts of THAT. What we need are honest educated people thinking about these things rationally, not pie in the sky ideology, else the problem will get solved by a world war and mass starvation.

LOL. For a "pragmatic realist" you sure talk like an idealist. I think coal is terrible. It wrecks the scenery AND spews CO2 worse than oil. We are just stuck with it for making electricity for a while. Thats now things work NOW, not is some Start Trek future. Personally, I'd rather breathe more CO2 than radioactive iodine or more carbon 14. Not having to live through a world wide depression is also a plus. That being the case, natural gas is pretty attractive when combined with renewables if you're not an extreme idealogue about carbon emissions. There is always the hope that some obscure physicist will figure out a magic solution like cold fusion but we cannot count on that. People could always stop breeding like rabbits too but that just about as unlikely. Mass plague and world war would also solve the problem. One thing I know for sure, people who advocate simple solutions to complex and subtle problems should probably go back to school.

Rocket448, Blame the Ecoterrorists in this country. It takes 3 years to build a refinery. My husband's father was building them in the 60's with the technology back then at that rate. Given our current technology I dare say this country has the capacity to build refineries in 3 years or less and the oil is out there. Politics and special interests on BOTH sides keeps this country a slave to the Saudi pervs and many other dictatorships. So that being said, do your homework and blame the greenies and the whiners for our current situation along with the special interests groups. We can make changes if we stop sticking our thumbs up our butts as we put Saudi oil in our tanks. Our oil and gas comes from many places. None of them very friendly to this country. Venezuela, Iran, Russia, Iraq, Saudi, etc...Seems we are supporting those who wish to do us as a nation great bodily harm. Now that will put a tiger in your tank! Reply

@fiestygirl, Do some research and start asking your father-in-law what the oil companies do with the oil they drill for. It goes on the GLOBAL market. Why do we still export some of the oil drilled in this country? You are aware that the majority of the oil we get in this country does, in fact, come from friendly sources. Last time I checked, we weren't at war with Canada or Mexico, our primary importers of oil. NOT the Middle East, Russia, or Venezuela. Want to lower the price of oil and really put a hurtin' on countries whose primary source of income is oil? Stop using it. But keep in mind, that China and India, fast rising economic powerhouses, are demanding more and more oil. Their demand for it will keep prices high. Yes, we will need to keep using it as well, but the problem now is our utter dependence on a non-renewable resource that wars have been, and are, being fought over.

Feistygirl, like any corporatist you blame "greenies and whiners and special interest groups" for restricting further oil drilling in ANWAR or anywhere else in the land; but the groups you mention have no power to say where the corporations should or shouldn't drill. Its the unpatriotic, money-crazed American-owned energy corporations that have forced the US into an unhealthy relationship to dwindling fossil fuel resources. If US-owned energy companies plowed just a bit of their outrageously obscene oil profits into developing alternative energy sources we'd never have to depend on any other country for the fuel to power our society. But people like you who apologize for the corporations and regurgitate their propaganda in favor of drilling for ever-scarcer oil are what really stand between us and energy independence. The status quo is unsustainable. Open your eyes. Your father-in-law's world is dead and gone. We've passed the point where oil can be extracted easily here in the US and we will need every ounce to use a raw material in manufacturing. There are plenty opportunities for energy companies to make a huge profit selling renewable energy; its time for them to leave oil behind. Stop defending the status quo and get behind the movement to renewable energy resources.
