(Newser) – Metallica aims to turn a generation of finger-tappers into headbangers with a new iPhone application. Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica, a variant of the top-selling Tap Tap Revenge game, lets players tap their screens in time to hits like Enter Sandman. The game, priced at $4.99, is expected to make it into the top 10 music apps at the iStore but the rockers say it's more about staying relevant than making money.

"It's one more thing that'll keep me semi-cool in my kids' eyes for another six months until the next thing comes out," says drummer Lars Ulrich, the father of two boys aged 8 and 11. "It's not about the money or revenue or some master plan. This stuff all falls in the fun category."

Metallica ought to concentrate on putting out music that people want to listen to, rather than simply playing along with. It's gone from being 'Art' into being just another 'product.'

True that - Mind you, Some Kind of Monster laid them a little too bare for me. I like the while mystery thing around my icons! As for 'this aint about the money' Lars 'I want to close down Napster yet stay relevant to the kids' Ulrich - He's talking crap - if it wasn't about money - why isn't the app retailing at a lower price? And Lars always has a master plan!!
