Do-Nothing Bystanders Watched, Filmed Calif. Rape

Two arrests made in vicious 2-hour attack

(Newser) – Two arrests have been made in a homecoming night rape of a 15-year-old high school student that was witnessed by as many as 15 do-nothing bystanders. Some may have even participated in the two-hour attack in a San Francisco suburb while others apparently filmed the assault with cell phones, according to police. No one called police or helped the victim. "As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated," said a police official.

The girl was assaulted so severely that she had to be airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, reports KGO. She had left her homecoming dance at a Richmond high school alone before midnight when she was attacked near the school. At least some of her suspected seven attackers are believed to be students or former students of her school, according to police. Investigators are checking YouTube for possible film of the attack.

I returned from Nam, gravitated to a club of Harley owners. IF we ever came across such actions and a couple times we did indeed do just that the cops only had to come and mop up, the abuser or rapist didn't fare to well. Then again I am from an area we always took care of our own and protected each other, rapists, child molesters, wife beaters and dead beat dads got a routine tune up any time we crossed paths.... The youth today are hollow..to watch such a thing is as bad as the crime itself as each had a hand in the actual rape by standing and watching

The youth of today are no more callous and careless as the youth of yesterday or the youth of tomorrow. It is entirely possible and in fact likely that such things occurred in the past, and you never heard of it because those that stood by and watched never told, and those who committed such atrocious acts were never exposed, arrested, and convicted. In this case, at least there was some advocate for the victim who made her attack known. I hope the attackers are found out and prosecuted. I hope the by-standers are also revealed and, if appropriate, prosecuted. And I hope this girl has a great family and some support system to help her through the emotional ordeal that she will endure for years to come.

Wow - desensitised, voyeuristic, now I'm not huge on the old blame game when it comes to violence/sex on TV/computer games etc...but I'm having trouble not making a connection between the ability to sit in a movie cinema and watch fantasy rape/torture type horror movies for pleasure, and the ability to watch the real thing and feel comfortable enough not to intervene. Kids are like sponges in some respects, and our ability to adapt and learn is, at least in terms of survival, essentially our main genetic USP - so you expose kids to adult concepts from a very young age, and they grow up comfortable with acts they are not always mature enough to emotionally connect with. Perhaps that's what's gone on here - or maybe randomly a group of sociopaths just happened to be at a party together - Whatever the cause - if this is straight up, it is causing me real concern that it could be the tip of a nasty iceberg. In Westminster (London) this year so far, there have been 34 knife related crimes involving under 15 yr olds - Last year there were a total of 36 - of all ages - there is a growing level of violence and apparent lack of 'feeling' in some of the crimes reported in recent years - stories of kids doing crazy stuff, and then feeling no remorse - I hate to say it - but I think they need to look deeper into where this is coming from - although with so much money being made out of this demographic from product which connects with some pretty primal Freudian urges, it's gong to be an uphill struggle until the problem becomes more widespread. And this is not about freedom of speech - it's about children being filled with stuff they are ill-equipped and unable to assimilate in a healthy way. Reply

Nice one thinker - Only get touchy when people refuse to think for themselves and rely on 'experts'. As an 'expert' myself, I know that my opinion is based only on my training, experience and brand of insight + what the client brings as their agenda and how far they are willing to go - and that you could get a totally different set of 'expert' views from someone else - Point is, there is no absolute 'right' and 'wrong' - when it comes to most therapy - just whatever you chose to run with and in the end helps functionality. The reason I mentioned the Freudian urges by the way was more to do with the marketing of the games and what they target (sex and death), so much of what he developed has now been added too/disproved/debated/negated; it's no longer really applied in the field.

I disagree. I'm no longer a teenager, but I'm not too far from that age yet and my friends wouldn't have done this. This is not a case of today's youth being more violent. They're not, they're the same as any other point in history. If anything, this is a result of groupthink. Men gang rape because the alpha(s) in their group want to. The others in the group don't want to be ostracized. This is just an extension of that. People got pulled in for whatever reason, and then didn't want to look stupid in front of the others. This is what happens when we teach our children to conform. We push the idea (knowingly or not) that they should be normal and be like the other kids and this is the kind of thing that can result from that.

Track down all the people involved (watching is the same as doing if you don't try to stop it in some way....silence is complicity after all) and the first thing you do is sterilize each and every one of them no matter what age so that no matter what happens they can't breed. Next you throw them all (Once again no matter what age) in prison for LIFE. No parole, no visitors, just a small cell for 50 or a hundred years till they die in jail and then when they die in jail take them and throw them in a landfill. Those people (no matter what age) are scum. I NEVER would have just sat there, never. I would have left and called the cops or if it was one rapist or just a couple I would have stepped in to stop them but I NEVER would just allow it and for them not only to allow it but to film it shows they are garbage and must be throw in jail for LIFE....................You start doing that to people NO MATTER WHAT AGE THEY ARE and things would change. Maybe not 100%, but they would change some I guarantee it. ---------Here's a nice easy law to understand and enforce and prosecute: "All violent crimes (other than self defense or defense of another) are life in jail no matter what age, no matter whatever. No plea bargaining, no reduced sentence, no leeway for the judge or prosecutor....you commit the crime, you pay with your freedom for the rest of your life" That should be the law. Period. Wait, let's add that if they are under 18 that we throw their parents in jail for life too. Parenting will make a quick comeback, so ad that onto the law. Reply

SO sad, the parents have a lot to answer for, HOW can they bring up such vile humans that just stand by and watch? if the kids were scared to tell they could have texted someone else to call the police. Each one of the bystanders should be charged, I don't know with what, maybe aided and a abiding a violent crime. Age, socioeconomic status, home environment and cultural standards all play a role in this incident or any like it. Golding's Lord of the Flies illustrated what could happen if children were left alone to create a social system; he implies that civilization is but a veneer, and primal savagery is the normal state of man. If young people have no society other than the one they make for themselves, then I would expect to see violent amorality flourish among them. Reply

@witness23 - My point is that, assuming Golding is correct, to protect itself from being destroyed by savage violence, civilized society must extend to everyone. Allowing people to dwell nearby yet not in society means that these kinds of incidents will happen. They're predictable, and they're also a sign that there are gaps in the social fabric which need to be repaired for everyone's safety.

i just read this article and i must say i am frankly disgusted. not just at the crime itself, but the fact that there are comments on the page making fun of it. That is just stepping over the line right there. Also, why are some making this into a political issue? Crimes like this has nothing to do with politics, only with the morality of people. Also, 15 people? 15 PEOPLE? They think that it is ok to videotape abuse but do nothing about it. Those people along with the perpetrators should be prosecuted for allowing such a thing to happen. Some may say that it had nothing to do with them so they necessarily did not have to report it, as it was not personal to them. But people need to have a sense of responsibility, and did none of them ever hear the quote, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Reply
