Keep Anti-Gays in Closet: Colbert

Anti-gay marriage petitioners in Washington value their privacy

Share

(Newser) – Stephen Colbert had a fine time last night espousing the rights of that “persecuted minority”—anti-gay-marriage activists. You see, the group that gathered signatures for a referendum against Washington state’s recently signed domestic partnership legislation is refusing to disclose the names of the signers, the Huffington Post notes. Because “signing a petition,” according to Colbert, “is a sacred trust between you and a stranger at a folding table outside the mall.”

“If those names are released,” Colbert continues, folks would know “their orientation about other people’s sexual orientation. And that’s a very personal thing.” Oh, you might say “they chose to sign this petition. But folks, I don’t believe it is a choice. I believe you’re born thinking gays don’t have the right to get married.” And “the gays have no right to out these people.” So Washington voters should just affirm the law, “because then no one will care who signed the petition” and “these people can stay in the closet that the gay people have abandoned.”

Idiocy, not genius...anti-gays are already OUT of the closet, so if they are out, you can't keep them it.

Since this story is about an American hero's fight against discrimination against gays in long-term, committed monogamous relationships, I don't consider it off topic to comment on the ad on this page depicting a small, tortured looking child with the exhortation "Don't Let Public Schools Teach Homosexual Marriage." If you do click on the "listen and donate now" button you will not find it easy to identify and locate the link and listen to the "shocking" NPR story (it's shockingly unbiased and well informed.) However the link is there and the story is really about a debate over what could and should be taught, not what is actually being taught, in public schools in Massachusetts. What is everywhere on the series of pages that lead to this racist and homophobic group's website are DONATE NOW opportunities, along with other ways to get involved in the election now going on in Maine over the gay marriage issue. I think we ALL (and that includes newser) should butt out of this and let the voters of Maine make up their own minds. Why does newser have to accept sleazy, dishonest advertising like this? This latest one makes the long running and ludicrous "Is Obama Bad for Business" ad look "fair and balanced" in comparison.
