Palin's Book Retainer: $1.25M

'Going Rogue' goes on sale next month

(Newser) – Harper Collins paid $1.25 million to Sarah Palin as a retainer for her upcoming memoir. Given the early buzz on pre-orders, she'll likely pull in more once Going Rogue goes on sale next month. Financial disclosure reports from her final 7 months as governor also note that Palin took out a home loan from Wells Fargo for, in her words: “legal fees to fight false allegations while governor,” the Anchorage Daily News reports.

Her legal funds were frozen because of those nuisance lawsuits. If she had equity in her home, between her and her bank, she can use it for whatever she wants. The "system" allows that. It's called working hard :)

sannonals is right. but second thing is that the idea of using home equity for something other then you're home is a HUGE reason we're in the crisis that we're in right now. People took HUGE sums of money from their homes for boats, cars, atvs, jetskis, you name it... Home equity should be for HOME EQUITY items like renovations and additions, not for toys in the driveway or legal battles when you're making MILLIONS elsewhere.

I am a male member of Team Sarah. I read a lot of incorrect just now on this page. I'd like to give samples of correct information. About the part that she allegedly doesn't even read, go back to the original interview where Katie Couric asked her "What do you read?" Gov. Palin's answer was very clear and simple: "Everything." How much more clear and simple can you get? Why do people miss that? About the part where she allegedly did nothing in office, I'd like to share a few things. For one thing, she faced off against the Alaska Republican Convention and cleaned up corruption there. She cleaned up corruption in Alaska Government. That was so rapid in political heads rolling, it was a political French Revolution. She tore up the deal the oil corporation had going with too little tax to pay and forced them to pay higher, in other words more fair tax in Alaska. After ripping the oil companies' original deal to pieces, she called them back again to the bargaining table to talk with the environmental bloc. The Energy bloc and the Environment bloc had been fighting each other bitterly for decades. Palin got them to sit down together, find enough common ground and helped pass the Alaska Gas Initiative Act, something many people thought would never happen. Palin got the actually got the process going to start getting energy down to the lower 48 states as Governor. Those are just a few sample things of what she did in office. Since Team Sarah works to support Sarah Palin, including refuting untruths about her and getting true information out about her, all Palin's activists ask that people have an open mind about this truth, embrace it and disregard the falsehoods spread everywhere about Sarah Palin. As a Sarah 'maven' then you would ALSO know that from the original Couric interview, after being pressed for specifics, Palin was flustered and unable to name a single journal, magazine, newspaper etc., giving the impression of asking a teenager to name the title of the movie they were supposed to be attending (when they weren't). ---- Then there was the Bridge to Nowhere., plus Alaska was the "largest per-capita recipient of federal earmarks during Palin's governorship, and of course there were the myriad of mirth-making missteps throughout her failed VP campaign.---- But the most telling and most egregious act, was her resignation from the office of governor a mere 2 1/2 years into her term with a lame excuse about being a lame duck. ---- Promote Palin if you must, but you promote an empty suit...er...dress.

Although I definitely appreciate your tone, I do find fault with your reasoning. First of all, I find issue with her support of the "Bridge to Nowhere". Although I have no problem with building a bridge in that area, it seems ridiculous spend $398 million on a bridge as long as the Golden Gate and higher than the Brooklyn Bridge to transport about 350,000 people annually (the Golden Gate carries that much traffic in 2 days), especially considering the fact that, at points, the Tongass Narrows it was designed to cross is less than 1/4 mile. Why not design a draw bridge? That would allow for boats to pass, would surely be cheaper and, given the low level of traffic, wouldn't unduly inconvenience people. Also, about the Alaska Gas Initiative Act. What of it? It gives $500 million to help fund a $26 billion (yes, billion) pipeline to the Midwest. There is also a privately funded competitor, on roughly the same schedule. So your view that this was "something many people thought would never happen" seems a little misguided. And do we really need it? We should be getting away from fossil fuels, not encouraging their use. I also find issue with the bounties she offered to hunters to kill wolves. If this was a controlled, scientifically run process, I would be ok with it. Instead, it seemed to be a politically motivated project. Lastly, I VERY MUCH find issue with her claim that "...you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska" as provides some kind of "insight into Russian actions". That, frankly, is ridiculous.

Okay, I try not to get to involved here but I have to say this... Someone here is listening to much to Hollywood and the stupid things that they say. About the "issue with the bounties she offered to hunters to kill wolves". It's not because she wanted the poor little wolves to be killed. It was so the wolf population would not get out of control and kill off the caribou. I've heard that one adult wolf can take out dozens of caribou in one years time. If she did nothing about that, then the animal rights wing nuts would be whining about " she's not doing anything about the caribou". So give it a rest, already!

Kirby, she did in fact offer the bounty. And I am aware that biologists WANTED to cull the wolf population. However, what happened was the Dept. of Fish and Game, under Palin's direction, offered the bounty (really to offset the cost of fuel, as it was only $150), and not the Board of Game. So, what I am talking about here is that she essentially cut the scientists out of the loop, which could have easily lead to overhunting. And why focus on just this one issue? There were a number of points I brought up. Perhaps it's a case of cherrypicking?

Ms. Palin had a 'ghost writer' for this book. I wonder how much of any payments made for this book go to the ghost writer. I doubt Ms. Palin could have proceeded beyong the preface on her own. Actually, I doubt that she has informed positions on anything except Russia being outside her back door. Based on that, the ghost writer should get it all. Reply
