Body Shop's Roddick Dies

Posted Sep 10, 07 6:28 PM CDT in World Business Arts & Living

(Newser) – Dame Anita Roddick, who as founder of the Body Shop championed socially and environmentally responsible business practices, died tonight of a massive brain hemorrhage at age 64. The plucky Brit saw her lone natural-ingredient shop grow into more than 2,000 stores worldwide, and she sold her share of the company to L'Oreal last year.

"We reused everything, we refilled everything and we recycled all we could," Roddick once said of her mother's WWII frugality, to which she attributed her store's commitment to the environment—among other causes. "Anita was the heart and passion of the Body Shop and achieved so much, whether on animal rights, human rights, (or) community trade," said Body Shop's current chairman.
