Pirates Raid Brewers, 9-0

Posted Sep 11, 07 9:45 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Tony Armas pitched a career-maker for Pittsburgh last night, shutting out the Brewers over six innings and helping the Pirates ferment the tight NL Central division race. Nate McLouth started things big for the Pirates, hitting the 1000th home run at PNC Park into the river, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports.

Carlos Villanueva, who pitched dominantly for the first four innings, drew the loss, though it was the Brewers bullpen that gave up the final seven runs. The Brewers fell to a tie for the division lead with the Cubs. Pittsburgh, who gave them that lead by trouncing Chicago on Sunday, is a distant 9 1/2 games back.
