Coast Guard Still Searching for Crash Survivors

Little hope 24 hours after accident off Calif.

Share

(Newser) – The search continues tonight for survivors from last night’s midair collision of a Coast Guard plane and a Marine helicopter off the Southern California coast, but hopes grow ever slimmer of finding any of the nine crew members alive. Officials have yet to re-examine air traffic recordings for any clues on how the aircraft collided.

Coast Guard pilots prepare to take off on a search mission today.

Even if they survived the accident, 24 hours in that temperature of water without protection ... not good. Reply

I used to have a formula for that .....sea temp, air temp and exposure time...all cross indexed to give a survival time in hours or minutes...as you said Joe Q....."not good"....the water there is cold..I used to surf at seal point and mission beach , ect...that water was fricken cold... Reply

After hearing reports of an observed "giant fireball," I don't really hold out much hope. As I said when I first read about this, Rest In Peace, Shipmates. I say Shipmates because I was Navy, and the Coast Guard are like our little brother with the shittier, yet more rewarding, job.

If the water was cold, sadly they are almost definitely gone.
