World Trade Center Steel Sails Back to NY

Share

(Newser) – Seven and a half tons of steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers returned to New York today, reconstituted as the bow of a newly launched Navy warship. The crew of USS New York stood at attention for a 21-gun salute as the $1 billion amphibious dock landing ship sailed past Ground Zero. "I thought about my son, how proud he is and all of them, how proud they'd be at this moment," the mother of a firefighter who died on 9/11 told the Daily News. The ship will be christened Saturday.

Me too: Sigh. No chance of the steel being used to make an orphanage or a library or a homeless shelter. No, it must be a warship. They shoulda called it the USS BushCheneyRumsfeld. -------- Remember: "Patriotism is sometimes the last refuge of a scoundrel" (Samuel Johnson, devout Anglican and political conservative, "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history" (1709-1784).

You won't get one from me. For too long, being patriotic has been equated with being conservative. Being patriotic has nothing to do with political affiliation.
