Obama's Had Year We Can Believe In

Prez has already changed the world

(Newser) – There's been plenty to quibble about over the last year, but a look at the big picture shows that President Obama has been changing the world just as he was elected to do, writes Eugene Robinson. Obama's biggest accomplishment has been averting another Great Depression, Robinson notes in the Washington Post. The president has also made historic strides in many other areas, from appointing the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice to embracing multi-lateralism and accepting scientific consensus on climate change, Robinson writes.

Obama hasn't been bold enough in many areas, but much of that can be blamed on the nature of getting things done in Washington, especially in the face of Republican obstructionism, notes Robinson. On health care, the president has "brought us to the brink of truly meaningful reform much faster than anyone could have imagined a year ago," and the Democrats' dream of health insurance for all now looks set to become law, Robinson concludes. "Quite a record for 287 days: All that, and a Nobel Peace Prize, too."

He's a president, not an action hero. Most of my frustration is really with the process of getting anything done in Washington, which is not something Obama can unilaterally change, nimbly circumvent or blithely ignore. - Eugene Robinson

Ok - or maybe he was stating his intentions, his hopes if you like, and perhaps he's going to get as much done as he can in the time he has and the circumstances allow - but given that he is eating an elephant, small bites is all he can do. Might be a bit romantic, but I like to think if he could, he'd do the lot or die trying (that was a metaphor, not a threat to the president just in case some over zealous SS are reading!)

Ucantusethatname - "Government takeover of banks, car manufacturers and corporations" - don't you mean bail out after the credit driven Bush bubble burst in an attempt to save jobs, keep the economy afloat and prevent recession from slipping into depression? "Supporting the gay agenda to destroy traditional family values" The gay agenda is a civil rights issue - not a a family values one - unless you have the family values of some hick living back in the 1920's. "Appointing tax cheats to the Cabinet" - er.....really, after Bush's record? Really? "takeover the nation's healthcare system" - I thought he was trying to set up an alternative for people who currently have none. I understand you can keep whatever you currently have if you are happy with it. "Whether the stimulus avoided another depression is problematic." - No it's not - it's called economics. "Dems will continue to spend, spend, spend" yup - that is how a party which is intent on upgrading infrastructure, replacing old inefficient systems and pushing through reform has to do it - Nothing comes for free - except of course nothing. "apologizing to the world and denigrating America" I see you have an issue with humility - Are you one of those "Peace through superior fire power" dudes who think Iraq and Afghanistan are good for showing the world who's boss? Where I come from, you get respect for saying please when you don't have to, and for taking responsibility for the consequences of your actions. You entire outburst is so emotive and although a few of your points makes sense - on the whole, they are pretty intent on slamming and not on seeing the reality of the situation the whole world is battling against right now. I'm not saying Republican's are necessarily worse - But they are different - and it was time for a change - and a bit further on it will be time for a change again. It's how the whole history thing works. I'm sorry life has made you feel so bittter about reality. I sincerely hope you get to feel good about your country at some point in the next 4 years - be a shame not to.
