Obama Can't Save Democrats

NJ, Va. votes show that president's popularity isn't catching

Share

(Newser) – The message to Democratic candidates from yesterday's GOP wins in New Jersey and Virginia should be loud and clear: they're on their own, writes Dan McLaughlin. Jon Corzine and Creigh Deeds tied themselves as closely to possible to President Obama and lost, demonstrating that the president's continued personal popularity isn't rubbing off on his fellow Democrats, McLaughlin writes at RedState.

Obama's popularity hasn't even crossed over to his policies, McLaughlin notes, and the youth and minority voters that made the difference for him personally last year failed to turn out in force yesterday. "The revelation that Obama cannot help other Democrats get elected" is certain to affect his ability to govern, McLaughlin argues, since Blue Dog Democrats will no longer be swayed by the president's promises to help them campaign next year.

Obama tried to help Deeds and Corzine, and was unable to do so. He can help nobody but himself. And that fact alone is hugely significant. - Dan McLaughlin

I believe that President Obama really had nothing to do with this. From what I have been reading, these two gentlemen had very, very low approval ratings and that defeated them, not President Obama. He only spoke on their behalf, I believe, because he was merely was asked and he did not widh to disappoint. Reply

And had they won, you would be touting how much the Anointed One figured in their victories.

Why the voters choose two Republicans is what I'm curious about. Is it because the GOP can cure the economy and provide affordable heath care for EVERY American? What's the plan?

The President made 3 trips to NJ for Corzine. They were on stage together. Looks like campaigning for the candidate to me. What is your definition?

Really? "President Barack Obama traveled to the state to stump for Corzine on three occasions, and Vice President Joseph Biden and former President Bill Clinton also visited." http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601070&sid=aFDJpYStFL2s
