(Newser) – During a speech today on education, President Obama went off-script a bit to talk about how it figures into the lives of his kids, particularly elder daughter Malia. Saying that even the best “kids slack off,” he tells of the 11-year-old’s disappointment at scoring a 73 on recent science test. “She was depressed,” the First Dad said, and aimed to improve.

“She came home yesterday and got a 95,” Obama added. “‘I just like having knowledge’—that’s what she said. What happened was, she had started wanting it more than us.”

Brilliant--she wanted it more than us. Got it? you can push forever and if you're lucky your kid will have that one great teacher (we should pay teachers ten times more than we do) or they will learn to love to learn for themselves. I think that Malia has hit that and cool for her. He looks really skinny--joke.

I think pascoagian must've thought it was about a paternity test? It's not a term we hear much, but it can be figured out. Poor Malia must be under a lot of pressure. It's great that she found a balance and I'm sure finally having a dog helps a ton. She looks so happy running with her pet.

Reader you are Aristotle. The desire to learn, to read and understand the world and your reality is about the best way to spend your time here. Camus wrote that the only philosophical question worth pondering was suicide--meaning why is there meaning in life? Most fill it with religion, but the questing bright--the ones the Gods doom-- ponder and yearn. I spent all last week with a hired physicist tutor on a chalkboard to teach me the math behind special and general relativity. I get the theory, but I'm not so good with the math and you need that too. What is amazing to me is that books that I read decades ago only make real sense now in my fifties. Experience is part of learning, but the learning should never stop. And I love what TheInterested wrote--about learning and no politics here.

A family is a good thing and a good family is to be appreciated. All we are many times can be traced directly to the relationship we had with our family. I hope his committment to his family is stronger than the committment he has made to the people of the united States of America. You don't knock members of your family to strangers. Obama did that to Americans and he fiddles with health care instead of protecting our military in Afghanistan

Goes to show, there are no excuses for not being an involved parent. The President can take 5 minutes of his time to discuss education with his children, then America wake up. Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to our children's education, not the schools. I was lucky to have graduated from high school, I had no support. My children have had it and I'm very proud of their success in school no matter how minimal. "I'm Proud of You" goes a long way and it only takes 3 seconds to say it, but they will remember it a lifetime. Reply
