(Newser) – The New York Yankees are back in their rightful spot tonight, atop the baseball kingdom after beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-3, to win the World Series in six games. Hideki Matsui set a series record by driving in six runs, and left-hander Andy Pettitte was strong on short rest, allowing three runs before leaving in the sixth.

Matsui did most of his damage against Pedro Martinez, the starter for the defending champion Phillies. Matsui hit a two-run home run in the second inning, then added a two-run single in the fourth to basically chase Martinez. He added a two-run double in the seventh.

(NEWSER) - Phillies fans are rejoicing today as Cliff Lee, the left-hander who pitched for the team during the 2009 World Series, returned—giving the team one of the best rotations in history. Terms were agreed to late last night, an official tells the New York Times . The deal is believed to be for at least five years and $100 million: less than he was offered by the New York Yankees, but Lee, apparently, never wanted to leave Philadelphia. More»

(NEWSER) - Members of the New York government’s executive branch are barred from accepting gifts from lobbyists that could sway them, which is exactly what the state’s Commission on Public Integrity says embattled Gov. David Paterson did when he secured free World Series tickets from the Yankees for his son. Omnipresent aide David Johnson, at the center of Paterson’s other troubles, was also in attendance. The charges carry a fine of $90,000, and the panel referred the matter to AG Andrew Cuomo for more investigation. More»

(NEWSER) - Baseball’s hot stove was boiling mightily today, with the Philadelphia Phillies making the biggest news, reaching a deal to land Toronto right-hander Roy Halladay. That move could be part of a three-team trade, Jayson Stark hears, with Philadelphia sending left-hander Cliff Lee to Seattle. Toronto and Seattle would receive mainly prospects, though the AP reports that big-league pitchers JA Happ and Joe Blanton are on the table. More»

(NEWSER) - New Yorkers turned out in droves today to cheer the World Series champion Yankees as a ticker-tape parade made its way through the canyons of Lower Manhattan. Manager Joe Girardi received a key to the city at a City Hall ceremony, Series MVP Hideki Matsui thanked the fans over and over—in English—and Jay-Z joined Alex Rodriguez on a float.
